Tractor
none yet, leaning towards Kubota B2910
Folks, I'm brand new to the list and I'm shopping for my first tractor. My house is on a former egg farm of 6+ acres, 2 acres clear meadow/grass and the rest is treed (oak, ash, very little softwood) and abutting Rhode Island and Conneticut state forests. The terrain is fairly level, no steep hills or ravines. The remnants of barbed wire imbedded in the trees on the lot boundary suggests this land was used as pasture long ago. No boulders lying about, just plenty of rocks imbeded and sticking up a few inches above the soil (who know how deep they go). The loose rocks were used long ago for the stone walls.

I'm looking for a tractor to: mow the lawn, haul cut trees to yard for splitting/drying, dig up stumps and the smaller rocks, level out the "lawn" (fill in the hollows, cut away the humps), and eventually clear out the briar and saplings in the woods.

So far I've looked at Kubota and John Deere, and will check out New Holland. I'm not keen on the other brands, though Cub Cadet is possible as I have an old CC149 garden tractor that I'm happy with.

I think I'm going to need a 20-30 HP tractor to handle the FEL and backhoe. Also R4 tires, 4WD, Hydro Trans. Sound right? I've looked at the Kubota B7500, B2410, B2710 and JD 4115 and 4210. Between the two brands I like the Kubota B2710 and JD 4210, and am strongly leaning towards the Kubota due to the $3,000 savings.

Your comments, suggestions?

I doubt very seriously that you would be disappointed with a 2710. My chore list is similar to yours. I'm pleased with my 2910, but for the extra $800, you could get a nice rotary cutter. For the extra $3000 for the JD you could get a LOT of attachments.

I just bought a B2710 after looking at all the brands. You will not be disappointed with one. I looked at New Holland and Deere. I was looking at a Deere 4300. We landscape and needed a light tractor to prevent rutting the lawns we work on. The lighter tractor is easier to pull on our trailer, so we went with the Kubota B2710. We are very happy with the deal and enjoy the money we saved with the Kubota over the Deere. The New Hollands were nice, but just didn't seem to fit the bill.

The Kubota came standard with the hydro trans, an option on the Deere. Can't remember on the New Holland.

Roy welcome, I assume you are talking about a 3pt mount backhoe, if so make sure it is the one with a pto driven pump. I found that on unit without a pto pump that it seemed to overwork the tractors hydraulics and really increase fluid temperatures. Other than that I think you would be graetly pleased with a b2710.
