Hi Bob!

Been awhile, huh? I decided that I'd been away too long, so I just started doing a little "catching up"! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Forget how much catching up there'd be!!

Anyway, I thought I'd mention that the PBS network in Wisconsin had a great series last year on the barns of Wisconsin and the importance of restoring them. I believe there were a few tapes that could be purchased. If you're interested, I'll see if I can dig up the information for you. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

How's that 4710 running? I'm still looking, but the wife and I have established "THE Tractor Fund". It's growing nicely. Hopefully it won't be a whole lot longer! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Glad to hear you're moving forward on the Tractor Fund and still looking forward to seeing your thread entitled "Alleluia....Golfgar 4 Buys His Tractor." The 4710 runs real well. Yes....if it wouldn't be too much of a problem, I'd appreciate information on how one can procure those PBS tapes on Barn Renovation. Stay in touch...

Thanks Garry for providing the Wisconsin PBS website. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I'm going to read through the text and testimony of those interviewed for this broadcast before I decide to spend $24.95 on the video....but, it sound like a real nice overview on historic barn restoration efforts.....something I've developed an interest in.

Reading through the weblink reminded me of a local master craftsman and barn restoration expert named Richard Babcock that lives not far from me. He often gives historical slide shows in my local area on efforts he makes to restore old barns and discoveries regarding old time building methods he has made along the way. This fellow is a real expert when it comes to barn renovation. I feel like a toddler just barely crawling along next to him. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'm really glad you added the USA Today article - very worthwhile in own right, but also served as a "bump" for this excellent thread.

Probably won't get up to Cambridge until you get rid of the snow (and mud !!). Hope it's soon.

Hi Barry....

Good to hear from you.....was wondering from time to time if you were still making trips up to Cambridge. Well...as for the cold and snow....they're still here. Cold is coming back again on Monday....back down to 0-10F and the snow is taking a long time to melt. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Barns have always interested me and I'm learning things all the time new and interesting. Next thread I'll be starting maybe this Spring is on my "Stone Wall Renovation Project." I want to wait until I finish the walls so I could show before and after shots.

Do stop by sometime when you're up this Spring. Would like to have the chance to meet you.

Thanks for posting these pics. It's sad the owner couldn't have afforded to renovate this barn intact where it stood. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif It's structural integrity looked sound and intact. But, I can understand why buyers (many are builders under contract with private individuals) purchase and dismantle these barns for incorporation in other homes and barn conversions. The timbers are aesthetically pleasing to the eye, provide exceptional frame stability.....but, the price is getting to be something to behold. I've now heard of buyers paying upwards of $5K for 15-20 oak or chestnut timbers 12-20 feet in length. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Buying and modifying these old timbers is so far less expensive than building new post and beam timber homes from new timber.
