I dug in under a bush last night, and curled the bucket to pop it out and all I got was a mild wowee in the digging edge of the bucket. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Very suprised. Will a tooth bar help this, and where is the best place to purchase one without bending over? My use of this tooth bar is very limited, but if it saves me a $600 bucket replacement, I'm for it. Also, will it limit my digging as it will be harder to push into the soil?

Get a heavier cutting edge welded on. Say 1/2 in. by 4 in. It will really help stiffen up the bucket.

The toothbars actually make digging easier as the forces are concentrated on the few teeth instead of across the entire bucket edge. This allows the teeth to loosen things up a bit before the entire cutting edge gets "involved" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It makes a real big difference in digging. And they are very easy to remove when you do not want them on as they attach with two bolts on the sides.

There are tons of posts on this forum about toothbars.

I'll save you the reading.....

Get one.

I have on on my B, and I don't ever take it off. It does a great job.

Yes.

No, quite the opposite, in fact; makes it easier to dig in.

Yes! Get the toothbar. Many have made theirs, but I purchased mine. Lots of threads about pricing. Do a search for toothbars.

Robertm,

As others have said, for any kind of digging with a FEL, a toothbar is the way to go. It will be one of the most useful attachments you will buy. As to where to get one, the first place you should consider it Markham Welding. Check out www.markhamwelding.com.

After waiting three weeks for a way overpriced bar from my local dealer, I called the folks at Markham. I placed the order on a Monday, they built it and shipped it the same day, and I had it THE NEXT DAY!! Installed it two nights ago, and the difference when digging is amazing.

Quality workmenship, tremendous price, and great people. Can't say enough about the product and the company!!

Do a search here for toothbars or Markham Welding and you'll see that quite of few other guys say the same thing! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I stopped at my local Bobcat dealer/rental. They had a used toothbar for $150, It had new teeth on it, but I will have to cut it down for my bucket. I reinforce the top edge with 1 1/2 angle and weld on 3 hooks. I figure I'll have $200 in the project.

Okay- everyone recomends a toothbar. This is fine as long as the toothbar is mounted. What hapens if you take it off??

I still say replace the cutting edge with a much heavier one than comes on the small buckets. This way you have a much stronger bucket which is the object. Adding the toothbar for digging is fine but stiffen up the bucket first.

The cutting edge on my bucket wore out and was replaced with one much heavier. That's when the real difference was noticed.

I reworked my whole bucket. Welded Grader cutting edge up each side and along the bottom. Plus I filled in behind the grader edge on the whole underside of the bucket with 1/2 inch plate to keep the bottom flat. Close to a 3/4 inch thick bottom in the thing now. I got 8 large individual bolt on teeth and put on it. Digs great.

If my bucket gets bent it will be a serious event /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Also I don't ever have to worry about wearing out the bucket bottom dragging it around on rocks and pavement.
Also good for whamming things with /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

As others have said the tooth bars are very nice for digging and also stiffen up the front lip a bit., but not as well as welding on some hard heavy steel.
