Building a Boom Pole - thoughts?

Aging,

Good thoughts. I wanted to build it to fit either cat I or cat II hitches. Other attachments do this with a dual clevis hitch arrangement.

I had not thought about using two pins to hold the boom in place, to allow for adjustment. However, I think that might make it weaker under side loads? I'm still thinking out loud here, and brainstorming.

when I wrote about being vertically adjustable, I was thinking receiver hitch style
facing up square tubing steel. But a variation using round pipe could allow
side to side swing or positioning.

I'm going to try something here graphically with the keyboard ( might not be perfect)

Search for and read the thread "Boom pole from TSC - Any good ?". Lots of ideas. Check my two photos. My pole is 6' and is extendible. AI paid thought to how to chain up to items and have a chain in a key hole that can not come out. It wont get lost. A receiver at the hitch side can use a trailer ball. I can pull a trailer while the pole is on the tractor, jack knife up to a load, pick up, and drive forward, leaving the load over the trailer. A second receiver, on the boom tip, can hold an extension. A hydraulic top greatly increases the boom tip lift. Made to fit an iMatch. Buy a QH and use it as a jig when you build. Easier than measuring, and useful.

From the North Dakota State University Extension site. Gives a good "base" design to add whatever you want to it.

I have found tons of ideas here and at several other extension service site. Some of these plans date back many years but, are worth looking at. Some you may find are better than what is available today.

Here are links to some of the other ones:

FAPRI - Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute
UT Extension
UVM Extension : University of Vermont
MWPS: MidWest Plan Service, A Foundation of Knowledge for Agriculture
C.P.S. Plan Series Menu

Some of the same things appear on each site and some are quite lengthy. I have spent hours OOhhing and Awwing...at some of these plans. unfortunately, my wife thought (at first) that i was on "other" web sites ooogling at the "implements".

JJ luv the flowing curves on yours.
What is the hydraulic fixture in photo 3 used for?

The hyd attachment on my boom pole is a tree or limb or root cutter.

Here is another one of my attachments built using box bld shanks.

I have a modified version of that 6191 that was originally built for a 60hp Massey. Far heavier than I need without a full bucket of sand to hold the front end down.
I have a 2" receiver on my FEL fork frame that I can slide in a section of 2" for tall (light) lifts as well. (Such as erecting TV towers)

some issues between a FEL (front end loader) and booms, cherrie pickers and like i have used in past.

wanting a hand crank winch. hand crank like you might find on a trailer for a boat. were you can back trailer down into the water. then pull the cable out, hook to boat. then crank the boat up onto the trailer. but for a boom pole. being able to have a pulley at the very end. and hand crank near the base / 3pt hitch. so i can easily reach down over something.

lift height, as in getting a fridge, that is standing up right in back of a truck.

lift reach. trying to backup and trailer and tractor being at odd angles and trying to get reach, to little over middle of trailer. i may end up having less physical lift capacity with a longer reach boom pole. but being able to just lift up enough weight on an implement, that i might be able to push or simply drive trailer away and let implement scratch and slide its way off.

long reach, for myself would come in handy, when it comes winter time, and pulling out the paddle boat, and row boats. out of the lake. and not having to pull them up on dry land to hook them up. to lift them up vs just dragging them.

being able to turn the boom side to side. more so when loading a trailer. to backing up to an area say in the shed, and object is heavy enough, that trying to man handle the object to move it, is out of question. being able to swing boom side to side, would really help. it is when ya get tractor position just right, but off them 1/2" or couple inches, were trying to physically push or pull object over via second person and then dropping object slowly can be down right dangerous to almost impossible.

a boom pole that has multi connection points, so i can lift heavier and heavier objects. the closer i connect chain to the 3pt hitch. would be great.

trying to skid a log, i just put draw bar on, and run chain right around draw bar and end of log. in order to have max lift capacity, and keep the weight as close to rear tires as possible. so front wheels of tractor stay on ground. vs doing a wheely.

below are just various links, that may give you something to think about. along with looking up specs, of various sizes of how much they can handle.

above link. tongs (there is better name for them) for putting on a log and hooking to back of 3pt hitch directly.

Vestil Winch Operated Truck Jib Crane — 500/1000-Lb. Capacity, Model# WTJ-2 | Truck Cranes| Northern Tool + Equipment
if i could find something like above, as a 3pt hitch boom pole. you would have to pry it out cold dead hands.

Boggen

Here's some pic of my attempt

Forget a hand crank, I got a 12vdc 1 ton winch from HF.

Be careful with swing capability. If the tractor isn't level, when you lift something on the high side, it will swing quickly to the low side as soon as it is clear of the ground. Your swing motion needs to be lockable and controllable.
