Re: Building an 8 to 16 foot gooseneck dump trailer

Diamond C are very nice, at least the tilt decks I was looking at a few years ago. And yes, they do price them accordingly!

Guy that does some hauling for us at work had his Big Tex gooseneck deckover rear ended and it was totaled. He bought a Diamond C and from all appearances that is a beast of a trailer. Waaay better design and built than either Kaufman or Big Tex. I suspect it was priced accordingly. But a very nice trailer.

They are about 25% more. Just cant swing it. :(
Definitely worth it.

My local Load Trail and Iron Bull dealer has no interest in ordering me a Load Trail triple 8 :confused3:

Im getting tired of this.

That might be a good thing. With all the negative feed back on a tri axle, I think you should avoid them. Here is a picture of uneven ground with my 2 axle PJ dump, a three axle would be worse.

Why worse? With a triple, wouldnt there be a better chance more tires be in contact with surface?

I do agree triple axle is not the best, but can’t find anything affordable over 16,000gvwr
It seems like after the research I have done, 3) 7 or 8k axles cost considerably less than 2)10 k axles.

In my case, the three axle would not help. It is hard to see in the picture but I am parked on a sandstone ledge, the ground behind drops really fast. This goes back to one axle supporting the weight of three.

I do understand where you are coming from, cost is really important for me too. However, I have a lot of hind site at times because of it. I am in no way doubting your shopping ability and experience. Just throwing out some things to think about based on my experience, knowledge and facts. I try to keep opinion out of it. When I do voice an opinion I do try to back in up with experience, knowledge and facts. I don't always succeed, lol

You obviously have the experience and knowledge to make an informed decision. But I can tell you a triple axle is absolutely the last trailer axle style I would consider, particularly in a relatively short unit.

You’re right that it’s hard to visualize the hill especially with such a short distance but it looks like a walking beam spring trailer would easily keep both axels on the ground right there.

Pretty much makes my case for equalized spring suspension on tandem axles. 2 axles sharing the load, not one overloaded axle.

Yes if that little dip is all it takes to completely unload one I’d be afraid of bending an axel.

I guess I will have to take some more pictures, I will use my Lamar with spring/equalizer axles. You guys just don't get it. I can bottom an axle just by driving into a McDonalds parking lot. Loaded I only have two inches of clearance between the axle u-bolts and frame. Did you not look at the picture of my frame I posted? Look at your own trailers, you will see contact marks. When that happens what do you think is happening? The axle stops and unloads the other one. At least with torsion when the rubber stops giving and the axle movement stops it is not a slam stop like springs do.
