...While they are fine for certain aplications, this isn't one of them. Just say no to can lighting in your shop.

I agree. I have can lights in my house and they are only "bright" directly under the light. The rest of the light is diffused, or indirect. Not very conducive to lighting up a work area.

If I was planning the setup and wanted to work under incandescent, I'd make one area my main work station and light it with the incandescent. Then at least I'd have an "incandescent zone" that I could bring things to, to work on them in light I prefer. Most of the cans limit you to a 60 watt bulb, so depending on the height, you'd need 2 or 3 per station. Spread them out a little to cut down on shadows getting in your way. If I needed 3, I'd look into placing them into a triangle for instance. Put the switch for those lights right at the work station, maybe under the bench. A double size box that will hold a switch and an outlet is handy-never can have too many outlets. No reason you couldn't have multiple stations if you had something like a drill press or a grinder for instance. But the general lighting should be fluorescent like the other guys said.
