Also built a smaller boulder retaining wall on the SE corner. Here's a photo of the roof starting to go one. Decided to use ashpalt shingles that have the look of cedar shingles as best I could match them.

Bebster you had better count your blessings. If I lived closer you couldn't move without stepping on me. I would be right in the middle of it all, taking notes, offering suggestions, make keeping two mother in laws happy seem like child's play.

Actually, I did have to go before the zoning board of appeals for a special permit. I'm restricted to it being a workshop and not a residence because there is already a house on the property. Not a real issue as I'm planning on building another house on the adjacent 1 acre lot, so the barn serves as a good learning experience of what to do (or not to do!) on that next project. When that's done, I will have the barn as my space and my wife can have the new house as hers.

I don't know why I didn't follow this thread from the beginning. Read through the whole thing tonight. What a marvelous building you have there.

The only other time I have followed a post and beam project was many years ago on This Old House and I have been facinated with them since. One thing that has surprised me is the time it has taken to complete this project. I would have thought that with the timbers being pre-cut at the factory (and I may be wrong with this assumption) that this barn would have been erected in a very short period of time. I thought the SIPs would have gone up faster as well. This is not criticism, just an admission of my ignorance. I know the weather slowed down the pouring of the footings and basement walls, but did you anticipate the project taking this long? Were the timberframers accurate in their estimated construction time?

In the end (if not already), I know you will be the envy of every TBN'er who reads this thread as well as of your neighbors. Thanks you for documenting this facinating project.

Actually the project did go a little faster than I was able to keep up with the pictures. I have to process my digital pictures to make them fit within the 100K limit of TBN, and I get backlogged on that. May 15 was the day the last panel went on. And we quickly got the roof and walls papered. So many of these most recent pictures were actually taken sometime during the summer.

Also, some TBN's (I won't mention names) get a little rowdy from time to time and start pounding their keyboards demanding more pictures! So I like to keep a couple of images in reserve just to keep them happy. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Here's a photo of the 1,000 gallon propane tank going in. The tank weighed more than my JD 4410 could lift, so I needed to rent the big machine to move it off the delivery truck. While it was there, it dug the 5x5x18 hole hole for it.

You can see the roof now has a couple of skylights in it to get some light into the loft area. You can also see the awning windows above the double hung windows. I did this so I could keep the awnings and the upper part of the double hung window open during the summer and not let rain get inside.

I was at least able to get in the act and use my backhoe to dig the 2' deep trench for the gas line from the tank to the SW corner of the barn where the regulator is. Followed Junkman's advice and filled the tank as soon as I could before propane prices began to rise any more after the summer.

They get downright nasty at times, don't they? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I get the same way - want the instant gratification of seeing the completed project (or at least some progress). Again, a magnificent structure you've built.
