It IS a barn, that's my story and I'm sticking with it ! You're right that I'm building it to last centuries. My house was built in 1800 so I have some perspectives on time, and am willing to take the time to do things for the long term.

Although I like the rural life, tractors, etc. my children or their children may need a place to live, so my design is such that the barn could be converted into a house at some future generation.

Here's a picture of the basement (which is open on the downhill side). Room for 2 16' overhead doors. The 2 steel columns will support the timberframe columns directly above. The posts on the right were made from 4x8 fir posts, and we bolted 4 of them together to make a 14x7.5 post to support a timber frame post above.

No stairway from the lower level to the upper level without going outside? I think that I would at least frame for one in the event that at some time in the future, you do convert this to living space. Right now, it will be probably only be a couple of hours additional labor, but later on, it might be a lot more. A 3'X6' opening would be enough... just figure out where the stairs would be and go from there. I almost made this mistake when building my home, but caught it before the floor plan was finalized. Made provision for two stairways to the cellar and picked the one that we wanted to use after we were in the house for a year. The one that wasn't used is now a closet, but can always be changed back if some future owner wants it. I even provided for a stairway from the attached garage into the cellar, but we never did install it. Plan ahead whenever you can, even if it means backtracking for a half day. Yes, planning to put in an "L" shaped stair from basement to 1st floor and from 1st floor to loft. But the timberframe crew wanted the deck solid for safety reasons. So we put in temporary 2x12's over that area. These will eventually be removed and the stairs built. Too windy and cold in January to go outside to move between floors!

I don't know about up there, but here we've had rain every day until yesterday over the last week. Today has been nice but calling for rain in the night. Been a real struggle to get the mowin in and it is growing 6-8 inches each week!

I only wish that we had rain like that. I have been dragging hoses to water the 3 trees that I have planted and I have 9 more to plant and water on the grounds now. I have been doing so much planting and moving of plants that I haven't had time to do much grass cutting and the dandelions are taking over the lawns.
