I have a question on the frame. Between the upper and lower plates of the swing part which connects to the frame it is left hollow and open. Should this not be boxed in and strenghten some how. My idea was to turn the tube I placed for trial fit and see on end and cut to size weld in place. That way there will be more support and be box in so muck does not accumulate. Or is there a reason that this area needs to be left hollow. I am thinking to order this valve (see attached). Will this work.

That looks like a nice valve, I wished they would of had them when I ordered mine duel joystick valve.

I believe my assembly is boxed in. I will take a look when I get a chance.

Thanks for the response J_J. I believe it will work fine as well. I have been told that it is not very advisable to run a 2 stage pump even if the low pressure section is by-passed. So looks like I will order the pump as well.

I am building a backhoe and plan on, at least hope to, use the tractors hydraulics. I was considering the Salami valve but was curious about the Chief. Anyway, the specs did not mention or I didn't see any referrence to open or closed center so I called them. I was told it is a "Tandem center" a term I was unfamiliar with so after a number of internet searches I believe the tandem is the same as open with the added benefit of blocking certain ports when in the neutral position so the cylinder remains locked where you left it. Anyway, now I'm leaning toward your selection.

I looked at my machine, and it is not boxed in, looks like yours. Perhaps they thought to run the hydraulic hose through the tunnels.

To bend the back plate for your bucket. If you have a hydraulic press you could turn that into a small press break. Weld some 2" angle to a plate to create a valley and set the plate on it put some bar stock on top of the plate and press. move a few inches and repeat. This can get you close. I have a 20 ton HF press and this worked for 1/4" plate 14" wide.

I am putting together the pivot and swing assembly and am a little confused about the bushing placement. Should they be flat to the plates of the pivot or slightly pertruding to keep the swing assembly from dragging and possibly getting caught up. If I weld flush to the inside top and bottom of the pivot plates then I will need to get some shims to space the pivot centered inbetween the plates. I could use your suggestions and help. A picture would be nice!:confused:

Here is a picture, am I nice or what? The boom is flat so it will ride against the flat surface of the receiver. If you put a protrusion on the outside of the boom, it would eventually eat a hole in the side plates. Besides that, the receiver is built to take a 4 x 4 box steel. Is your wall thickness 3/16, or i/4 in?

Do you have the complete plans for the BH? A picture would be nice, but not necessary. Mine is somewhere else right now,

Yah you nice. Thanx. I can see that I will need to put some brass shims apporimately .060 to .100 " on the swing assembly as I had mine milled parallel and flat. Thanx again for the pic. My plans ask for 3x3 tubing for the boom.The sleeve /bushings will pertrude by approx. 1/4". I can see that 6this might create a problem?! I will verify the plans but I'm sure they ask for 3x3.

j-j just a note about 10 yrs ago I rented a backhoe from a rental house that was about the size of a bota bcx 23 but it used a double chain wrapped around the boom mount to rotate it,not sure if the backhoe was wore out or poorly maintained but was hard to control ie: slammed into the lp tank and the renters prized roundy round car) adjusted chain tension, but then it started to bind and bent top pin in pivot assembly, I replaced the pin since I fiddled with kinda my fault until I discovered someone had used a hot rolled steel rod instead of a hardened pin, anyway never was able to get rid of the excessive play in the swing, not my machine I should have left well enough alone, after that I built my own towable backhoe, their maintennance man thanked me for fixing it :mad: lesson learned, but I was taught to returned items in same conditon or better than when I borrowed them;)
