Chainsaw Sharpener Advice

Thirty years ago I used a bell saw sharpener but since then I use a hand file in a good holder with the angle line on them. I place the bar in a vise with the angle lines scratched on the vise.

I used several types of sharpening. Hand files, small rotary grinder with stones, then switched to diamond bits, finally a fancy wheel grinder contraption. Been back to hand files for the last few years. I can do a pretty good job with the files, and my chains last longer. But I cut/split/haul/stack/haul/stack/burn wood for a FUN activity in the fall/winter months... not cuz I have to....

Thanks rekees4300! I've got a Stihl 661C. When I bought it the guy told me it had a 3/8 chain yet my 7/32 file works perfect. Do you know what I should order for a cutter and what angle Stihl has? This chain out does my Oregon chain on the Husky by quite a bit!

7/32 file is what you are supposed to use on 3/8 chain.

Chain pitch has nothing to do with file size. Chain. Pitch (3/8, .325, .404, etc) is the half the distance measured between 3 rivets.

All of the stihl chain I have bought is 30 degree. If cutting all soft or green wood, you can gai. Speed going to 35, but will dull quicker cutting hard wood.

For hard dry stuff, if you find 30/degree is dulling too quick, you can go to 25. It will last longer at the expense of a little speed.

I go with 10 degree tilt on square/chisel chain and 0 tilt on round/chipper chain

Mtsfyt you need to determine the pitch of your chain. Their sizing instructions explain how to do that.

"The carbide size required is determined by the chain pitch which is usually labeled on the chain saw bar near the motor and sometimes imprinted on the chain itself. This number will be .404, 3/8, .325, or 3/8P"

If you buy a bench grinder plan to throw away the crappy pink wheel and replace it with a CBN wheel. They run a little over a $100 but are so worth it as you'll actually get a sharp chain with it. I bought the CS575.3878E from Chainsaw Sharpening Wheels | Super Abrasive CBN

G-1012XT - Grandberg Precision Grinder<<<< This is my latest $100.00 experiment, last week I bang my saw into a rock, went around the teeth a couple times with still along ways to go to get the cutters resharpen at somewhere near the same length. Seems like nowadays the cutters feel harder and take longer to file, so look online, wanted something bar mounted and electric. The Grandberg had some good reviews, so after one use, I'll give it 4 out of 5 stars and that could go up or down after a few more sharpening's......
