Sorry, but that's not the half of it. The bigger reason is a result of people have that have that way of thinking but either don't care or don't bother to figure out if they can afford it.
Pretty broad brush statement considering that you likely have no personal knowledge of anyone’s private financial situation, other than your own. I personally know of many people that have “toys” and can afford them without hurting their bank accounts.
One local fellow bought a Deere 60g excavator, followed a few weeks later by a 333G CTL, just to work on a plot of land his cabin is situated on. That’s pushing $200k of machinery, strictly for personal use. He’s a recently retired surgeon, but you would never know it by looking at him.
Of course I also know some that will have to live entirely on Social Security for income once retired from the workforce. It is all in how you educate yourself to be in a position to live the lifestyle you want. Education, hard work, along with good health and more than a little planning and good luck often leads you to success, and, eventually, rewards.
Just don’t wait till you are in a nursing home to reap the rewards of success.
