Cordless grease guns

Jeff, unfortunately, greasing things is just a dirty, messy job. You're situation sounds about normal to me, with one possible exception. If too much grease is getting by the plunger, the seal may be bad, but I expect some to get by all the time.

Mark,

Have you had a chance to test out the cordless grease gun?

One of the ways I gauge how much grease I am putting into a zirk is the number of times I pump the handle. After a while I know how many pumps a given fitting needs to be full, e.g., 10 - 12 pumps fills a mowing deck spindle (on my old garden tractor).

How do you do something similar with a cordless grease gun, or one that works off of air pressure?

Mike, on the air powered grease guns, it's not a continuous pressure. On the big service station type guns I used to use (pulling grease from a barrel), they would keep pumping as long as you held the trigger, but you heard each stroke of the piston, and "pop" (or whatever sound you want to call the air exhaust/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif). On these hand held air grease guns, it only pumps one stroke each time you pull the trigger, so you basically do it just like you do with your manual gun, except you can pull and release that trigger pretty rapidly; sort of like shooting a semi-automatic gun. And I think all of the cordless grease guns work about the same way.

Mike - The Lincoln cordless model uses a planetary drive to power a piston, so you can still count strokes, if you like.

I've used it on a couple fittings, just to check it out, but it hasn't gotten a good workout yet. I verified that it does work, and that it's easy to use, but that's about all so far.

No, not some of the grease is getting by the plunger....ALL of the grease is getting by the plunger thus wasting an entire tube of grease when I may have only greased one vehicle. The gun is not old, but maybe I just got a junky one. I think I will pop for an air driven one.(One more way to justify my compressor).

Jeff - I think it's time to trash that one, unless it's a good brand, in which case you should be able to get a new seal for the plunger. Still, probably not worth the trouble, though.

I just ordered a Lincold model 1160 air powered grease gun on sale at The Tool Warehouse for $44.67. The most interesting feature which got me was a flip over grease follower which is supposed to eliminate grease bypass. We'll see how it works.

If anyone is interested in the Lincoln cordless grease gun, I just ordered one from Harbor Freight for $129.99. Info is here. Don't know how much they tag on for shipping, but seemed like a pretty good price from what I've seen in this thread.
