Healthy looking cat. What am I saying that's getting closer to me. (Northwest GA.) Keep your kity at home please it's already got to where you can hardly raise chickens free range. Chicken coup or they don't last long. Lots of years ago I built a 6' high chicken run and built a little temporary coup and was gonna raise me some chickens. Bought 50 pullets and the first night had 25 dead, 2nd night 25 more dead. That was the end of my chicken career it lasted 2 days. After inspection found the culprit to be a weasel. Those are some elusive little boogers but they are around.

Sort of blurry due to screen shot from monitor (hence the TV reflection in the bottom right corner) and focus but here is a mountain lion in my area on my game cam. Strolled in around 3AM
Mountain Lions/Cougars are important due to the thinning of the deer population. Without them, deer populations can sky rocket and diseased deer become problems.
If the lion threatens you, shoot it but don't kill them just to kill them. They serve a role in nature.

It certainly appears there are more of these critters than anybody cares to admit. I know the world seems smaller with the communication we have nowadays but I had no idea they were within 1000 miles of me except for the Florida Panthers which don't seem to be migrating north anyway so never gave those any thought. We do have an over abundance of deer so I guess it's just a matter of time. Just like the coyote slowly coming into the area and now they are everywhere. Mother Nature has control.

Most humans will NEVER see a cougar/mountain lion with their own eyes. These cats are very elusive and have an instinctual fear of humans. So they walk among our homes/ranches/farms but we will probably never see one. With the recent popularity of game cams, we now capture them and see them but they were always there. A cat will be watching you and you will never know it. If you have a dog with you, it can alert you of its presence due to the smell of the cat.
In my area there are cows everywhere (open range), including baby calves but NOT ONCE in recent history has a mountain lion taken down a calf or cow. Numerous deer carcasses are found but never a cow carcass. Why? Cats instinctual don't see cows as prey, plus they want the challenge and fun of the hunt. The chase and capture of a deer is more rewarding than taking down a slow, fat cow that can't even move faster than 5mph.
Can a cougar take a cow? Sure, easily, but it's pretty rare to hear of. It's mainly deer and maybe a slow/sick elk.

I don't know about a cougar, but when I was a kid, I have seen with my own eyes our small herd of Angus cattle chase and run completely off our place a pair of coyotes. Those 'yotes were running for their lives, and I can tell you that our Angus can run a heck of a lot faster than 5mph. The cattle were hot on the heels of the 'yotes and they were getting the "heck out of Dodge"
Of course these cattle were the same ones that would stomp a groundhog hole shut and when he would dig back out they would chase them off the place too and stomp the hole shut again. Those Angus are tough SOB's. When we had mixed breed cattle they never exhibited that kind of behavior. At least not that I ever saw.
