Maybe if Sears had the highlighted link here like kabota their business would be booming, everyone would be clicking on their link going to their website, seeing those world class hard working 1/2" breaker bars in action and go ooooooooooooooooooooooooh aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah got have one, no I'll get two just incase I bend a handle on one with my ten ft' pipe on it, we'll there might be one on here that wont buy Craftsman breaker bar......

I read today that Lowe's will start carrying Craftsman tools. Also, "...... Stanley Black & Decker is shifting Craftsman production back from overseas plants to U.S. facilities. It has announced plans for a new U.S. factory to build Craftsman products at a location yet to be announced." From Sears' iconic Craftsman tools coming to rival Lowe's - Oct. 24, 217.

Steve

That's good news. That means we can buy cheaper chinese craftsman tools as Sears stores close down, then trade them in at Lowe's in a few years for some USA made stuff?

You are so right about Sears losing sight of their customer base, so long ago. Same thing happened to Montgomery Ward... they lost sight of their business base. At one time Sears & Roebuck were THE STORE, that is until they decided to cut their staff and cut wages. The effects showed up in lost customers, and has continued that trend now for years, until the final demise recently.

I still have a Montgomery and Wards 20" color TV that we keep for a spare upstairs for when one of the new TV's go out. Still works and has a clear picture. It's just a whole lot thicker and heavier than the other TV's in the house. But the lifetime alignment on my old 64 pickup is worthless now.

Longevity doesn't seem to matter much these days. Home Depot went into business in 1978; Lowe's in 1946. Amazon in 1994. Sears started up in 1886!!! What a shame... over 130 years in business and they forgot what brought them this far. Or - maybe there's another message in those numbers? What do you think?

Part of that is the short sightedness of the consumer. I wish we still had places like Monkey Wards around where one could buy quality items (warning to HD, Lowes, etc who also started out with quality and have gone the cheap route lately). Oddly enough Harbor Freight started out with one and done cheap stuff and has been going the opposite direction. They are actually selling some quality stuff now, and standing behind it with their warranty.

Strange thing is people flock to Walmart. Maybe Sears should have added groceries :D

Walmart now is where Sears used to be. I remember when Sears used to be the go to place for fishing lures and sporting goods. We'll have to see if Walmart can stay focused and keep up with the times while also remembering what got them to the top.

I know Walmart's search and filter function sucks compared to Amazon. I also know one of the Walmart stores near me did away with express lanes and switched them over to the scan and go and self check out lanes. I don't mind the self check out lanes for those who want to use them, but when they got rid of the express lanes and make you either wait in a long line or check yourself out, I'm ready to find a new store to shop at.

I think the local Sears no longer sells ammo... the local Walmart does.

I think the local Sears no longer sells ammo... the local Walmart does.

I think 50 years ago the Sears near me they had a good selection on ammo and guns then 40 years ago none, 30 years ago they went to the softer side with beds cloths appliances, then 20 years ago the tools started going to the softer side, I first noticed it on their expensive tape measures, salesman said you buy this tape Sears will replace it free if damaged or the markings are hard to read, had it replaced once 20 years ago after a long time of hard use, then 10 years ago or so the next replacement was junk, didn' last no time and to this day I'm still looking for a tuff tape measure, from what I see now tape measures have to be replaced atleast twice a year.

Kmart was about the same way, I use to buy guns an ammo there, past 15 years nothing. Walmart near me still sells guns and ammo and all kinds of hunting supplies, I'm willing to bet if they stop doing that they also will go down the slow twisted economic drain.

The stores put themselves out of business by confusing business trends with their own personal opinions of what those trends should be.

I like Sears for appliances. In the last 2 years I have bought a double oven, a basic fridge and basic freezer (overflow storage) for the garage. I went there first and then last while I was researching and ended up buying. Good delivery with the only hitch being they delivered the fridge and freezer, unboxed them and were going to leave the cardboard and packaging. I told them I didn’t buy any cardboard :D They were polite and loaded it in their truck and away they went. Good communication (text alerts) about when they were to deliver.

I think his point more had to do with warranty on the tools. Sears/Craftsman in their day was a leader in how to treat customers in regards to warranty.

Harbor Freight hand tools have a lifetime warranty. How does it compare to Craftsman's warranty?

Same warranty for both.

As a former and still somewhat tool snob, I did manage to break two Craftsman tools. One was a 1/2" ratchet that they wanted to replace with a beat-to-death rebuilt one in exchange. I refused and took a rebuild kit instead. The other was a big pair of lineman's sidecutter pliers that I had my wife return. They made her feel awful by saying I had misused them in some way and gave her a hard time. I'm OCD with tools so no on that.

After that, I bought a set of "throwaway" HF wrenches figuring they would be good for field work or places where they would get damaged. I didn't hold back and beat on them with hammers and levers and whatever. Not only can't I break any, I can't even lose them. As a result, I have never broken a HF wrench despite trying while at the same time have broken Craftsman despite OCD care.

I have some big name high polish tools and also some of the newer HF high polish and they are not that far apart any longer. The steel is good, the workmanhip good and if I were just starting out would not be afraid to own a whole set of them. China is getting things figured out, just like Japan did.

My first and second choice is to buy and support America but instinct that I can't control tells me to buy what's best for me.

You'd probably find that all those tools come off the same production line with name changes every hour or so.
The higher priced versions are simply prepaid insurance for the eventual replacement.
\On some brands like Snap-On you are paying the truck drivers commissions as that is how he earns his living.

I knew a fellow that visited a Chinese tool factory and he confirmed what I say.
He reported multiple brands of air tools all on same production line.
In some cases the molds or dies even have provisions for name changes with cheaper ones simply sporting a stick on label.
