dumping it off the back of a small boat and letting the outboard motor mix it

Eddie, I know you have quite an assortment of equipment down there, but do you also have a boat?:D

I've been looking at boats again recently myself. Sure do want one and want to get back to fishing, but know I shouldn't spend that kind of money.

Hey Bird,

It's not much of a boat, but yes, it floats, has a small 4hp motor and will hold all of us. It's only ten feet long, but easily fits in the back of my truck bed.

You might not have even noticed it in my "cheap pier" thread, so here's another picture of it.

Eddie, I must have overlooked or missed that in the past. That should be a handy little rig. I guess a 4 hp is about the smallest gas powered boat motor you can find now, but in 1970, I bought a new 2 hp Johnson to use on a canoe, then later on a 14' jon boat. And after 7 years, sold it for more than it cost new.

Looks like you still have the "California Registration" on that boat. ;)

Bird, check out eBay and outboard motor, they had a 1-1/2 hp outboard a couple of days ago. I have a 16' Lowe 50hp and a 19' Horizon pontoon 85 hp, the wife and I fish all summer long. A boat like Eddie has would be a great fishing boat for one or two people.

Yep, Bill, I was in error again. Since that post, I've found that Mercury still lists a 2.5 hp outboard on their website.

If I remember right, Johnson and Evinrude made the 1.5 hp outboards prior to 1970. You had to wrap the pull rope around the flywheel on top. Then in 1970 they came out with the 2 hp with a recoil starter, and it was really a dandy little motor. It used to be that you could rent aluminum boats at many lakes and that 2 hp was handy to carry in the trunk of the car.

And I made a deal this morning for a 2003 17' Fisher aluminum boat with a 40 hp Mercury outboard, so I can get back to fishing again if all our lakes don't dry up before it rains.

Derek,

Good eye. The boat has been in the family for about a decade. My dad saw it at a garage sale while driving by. He stoped and asked what they wanted for it. When they told him $100 and it included the motor, fuel tank, some seats, an anchor and ores, he couldnt' get the cash out fast enough!!!

He's never had a use for it, but thought it would be nice on his tow car whilr RVing. That never happened and for years, it just sat in his garage. Then my brother started to use it to fish some lakes in Fremont California, near where he used to live.

He hurt his back at work, had surgery on it a few times and isn't able to lift anything very heavy anymore. Early last year, it became my boat.

Bird,

Congrats on the boat!!! From what I've been told, the fishing has been exceptional at Lake Fork and Lake Palestine with the water down so low. What I don't understand, is drownings are WAY up! Not sure why, but maybe more people are out fishing and the percentages go up with more people on the water. We just had another fatality at Lake Palestine last week. Most years there's none or just one. This year we've had over a dozen.

Be safe,
Eddie

Eddie, I haven't heard about the accidents and drownings on Lake Fork and Lake Palestine, but we have them on the lakes around here, too, when the water levels are down. They say too many people are accustomed to running fast in the boats and then when the water level is down, they hit stumps and such in places they didn't expect them

Will,

There's a couple of feet of water in the deep end, but I'm still hauling out dirt. While working on the dump truck, my dad has been building a big dirt pile of good, clean clay for making the dam thicker and then for my roads.

As long as it's dry out, I'm gonna get all the good dirt out of it that I can!!!

I'll post a few pics tomorow.

Eddie
