I finished off the framing of the roof. One of my bigger mental challenges was determining the length of the end beams that form an exposed truss from PT 4x6's. The metal roof trim has about a 6 inch overlap. I wanted to be able to see the wood without the metal covering it up, so I put the purlins on top of it. This gave me a 3 1/2 inch spacer above the truss to absorb some of the overhang from the trim.

Once I figured out these numbers, it was smooth sailing.

The metal roof and trim is on and finished. I'll add the gutters later, but next I want to get the forms set for concrete.

As I was setting my forms I realized that I wasn't really happy with the way it was looking. The basice porch was simple enough, but I wanted to put a pad on the side for my BBQ and a walkway on the other side.

Here's the forms for the porch with rebar and paper on the wall to cut down on some of the splatter.

Eddie-

Quick question: How deep were the holes and how did you drive the posts into the holes?

I realized I had a problem when I had my forms set and started thinking about mowing. Getting a ride along mower into an inside corner just seemed like more work than I want to do. Anything I can do to make like easier is a good thing.

This bend will allow me to get the mower all along the edge. I also put a 4 inch drain pipe in for my downspout from that side of the porch.

I matched the radius on the other side for the walkway.

Another change in my plans was moving the walkway to the side of the porch instead of coming in at the front and winding it to the parking pad.

The space between the walkway and the path will be a planter for some flowering shrubs of some kind. Still have to figure out what I'll plant but that's low priority.

Here's the cement buggy from United Rentals. It holds one yard and the total cost for 2 1/2 yards was $305.

Spreading concrete isn't one of those things I enjoy, nor am I very good at it. But I'm cheap, and doing it myself is still the chaepest way I know. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's all poured, smoothed and finished with a broom. I like a broom finish for safety reasons, but it also covers up my poor troweling skills.

I'll get some better pics after I take off the forms.

I understand that. I know how to do it and I can get by in a pinch. But concrete finishing is one of those skills that is a true skill. And so far in my life it's been a skill I've not had the absolute need to acquire. There's always been either a skilled finisher involved or a broom handy. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
