I own one CVT transmission"ed" vehicle, a Ford Freestyle. I'll admit it was a little different but easily gotten used to. It's SMOOTH. The lack of shift points and RPM drops makes for a luxurious ride.

Yes, it keeps the torque of the motor right where it's best for the driving conditions at hand. For instance, if the car is totally loaded, then I'll see an increased RPM for even constant speed cruising down the highway.

It is awesome in snow. You aren't ever trying to put down more torque than conditions allow. I have the Limited with AWD and might have actually had it kick in once or twice; otherwise, I have to punch it if I want to 'play'.

As far as the pedal thing goes, I can see a point where tractors with CVT's go with 'Drive by Wire'. Just like motorcycles and cars now, I can easily see where they put a rocker foot pedal in as just another input and let the tractors electronics carry out your 'commands'. This would eliminate the shuttle shift and probably even do away with any kind of gear lever. You might push a button to tell the transmission what kind of work you'll be doing, but nothing of a manual shifter to move.

I've been pleased with my experience and urge someone to be open minded about it and give one a try.

Try them all, then buy what you like and that fits your needs the best.

Did the MF dealer say what models are HST and 300HP? I think that dealer may be confused. MF is part of AGCO which also owns Fendt, and I think the ones that large use the Fendt CVT.

Once you get over a certain size I think HST generates too much heat. You don't see very many machines over 100 hp in HST.

A lot of dirt gets pushed by dozers with hydrostatic drive.

no he didnt say what the sizes was.but he did say something about fendt.an that he couldve got me any size i wanted.

you know the sad thing is NH only makes what i call toy tractors.i dont care if they areCTV or HST.an they sure wont lift the big round bales on front an rear.i was a FORD/NH man till i started looking for a tractor a year ago.

what are you talking about. Nh has 45hp tractors that will lift a rounbd bale on the front and back

/ CTV TO HST COMPARISON #68
How mich does a round bale weigh anyway? Must be more than 2300 lbs cus that's what my farmall40 will pick up at 1500rpm.

/ CTV TO HST COMPARISON #69
im talking about 5 by 6 bales that weigh 1500lbs or better.i had dealer tell me their 55hp tractor would tip over carring 2 5 by 6 bales.ive towed 7000lbs an had 1500lbs on the loader for close to 9000lbs.

The brakes on the CVT don't get used at all in my application, because is stops within a few feet of letting of the pedal. I have 105 hours on my CVT and have probably only used the brakes 5 times. And that was when I was learning how to use it. Some of the members on this forum seem to be against the CVT unit, that's fine because most people don't like change. Everybody that coments on the new technology does't have seat time on both units. Since 2003 I have had 3 new hydro units and now this CVT unit, all I can say is give it some time cus it will grow on ya.

If you use the reactivity switch you don't need the brakes as much

/ CTV TO HST COMPARISON #71
I see your point, the hydro is a no brainer to drive. It took a couple weeks to get used the the lever. Every once in a while I still try to reverse with my foot.

No brainer, well maybe for some but it took me a little while. I was use to my shuttle shift BH and at first I wouldn't rev the motor up and just push on the pedal only to find I was dogging the engine. Now I've gotten use to HST and both the auto throttle and HST response I'm fine.

I really like the HST response knob. When the driveway start to get a little icy I just drive up and down it with the HST response turned to act immediately. By pushing on the forward/ reverse pedal it really spins the tires and the tire chains dig up the ice very quickly. Does CTV have the option to adjust how quick it responds?

crazyal that it the reactivity switch on NH that adjusts the response.

Bought the 3045, signed today! Delivered end of next week;)

I drove, the JD 3520, the MF 1635 and was in the Cab of two different Kabotas and for the money New Holland won hands down. I was really concerned with all the talk about the HST verse the CVT, that is why I started this thread. I tried all the relevant horsepower tractors, going back and fourth, turning while putting the loader up and down as suggested in other threads then did the same with the New Holland 3045 but did it last. I was really happy with all the suggestions on this thread and tried as many as I could, the 3045 was great! One post said that you had to come to a complete stop before switching into reverse but this is not the case. The dealer said to through it in reverse while moving forward as written in the glossy promo literature and I did just that. The tractor comes to a halt then starts going backwards just like reversing your foot on the HST. The only time I had to use the brake was when initially starting up, much like a car when taking it out of park, you step on the brake put the lever forward and away you go. Also the ranges are all push button, no levers to pull for four wheel drive as on the Massey. The 3045 is almost 2000 lbs heavier then the 1643. When shifting ranges on the 1643 MF I had to nudge the pedal to get it to changes ranges.

Anyway happy with all your suggestions and put my money where my ........
lol. I have attached a picture of the 3045, it will take a week or so to get all the addd toys that I am getting with it, I am looking forward to the end of next week.

Thanks again for all the input on the two styles of transmissions! This forum was a real help in my approach to buying my new tractor.

I think you made a good choice bironacad. I sure like the 3040 I got. I especially like how comfortable it is in the cab and how everything is close at hand when working the tractor. Enjoy. Bet it will be a long week.

Maybe you need to get out more?

John Deere Crawler Dozer

You won't find applications that are harder on transmissions than a dozer, yet they seem to do just fine with HST at the Deere factory...

Don't you know it. Thanks for your inputs especially. If your tractor can roll in second range for five miles up and down 10-15% grades while blowing snow my 600 foot drive on level ground will be a snap, eh?

Take care and I will show some pictures when doing my extension on the house.

I will miss the rustic looks of the McCormick Farmall as the dealer gave me $650 for it in trade so I will have to change my Avatar.

You shouldn't have any troubles on your drive. Probably won't even need chains. Please let me know how things are going once you get it. I don't if I said it here, but I did find one thing it won't do......push 8 inches of really wet slushy snow up hill with the blade. Just not enough traction even with chains on all 4.
