Think of the horrible death that happened back in the day before we knew what we know now. If it meant tasting or smelling urine so be it.
I have a book written by long past relative. Her brother passed from diabetes in the early 1900's. I can't imagine the suffering he went through. Especially after seeing the effects on my son before his diagnosis. What was interesting is the doctor said there is a medicine that could help him. It was for horses and was called insulin but it was not approved for humans yet. To make the story more tragic his wife was pregnant with their first child and the child died shortly after birth. My diabetic son now uses his name, Otis, for his German class.
My aunt was diagnosed diabetic in 1980 and even at that time she was told it was essentially a death sentence. She is now in her 60's. Those of us that have to deal with this should be thankful of any advancement made in this field. I could not imagine managing my son without all these resources that we have know.
