Re: Didn稚 know buying a truck was so hard

Thanks, dnw64! Indeed I was endorsing deezler's credentials to remind others. :) I was also thinking extra credit for his hot rodding background and context to help him explain stuff to those of us who haven't had the lab experience. His kind of work could not be more scientific, although it can include cleaning up messes resulting from catastrophic failure, replacing sensors and other things connected.

Yeah, I'm kind of a dude for 70. (AKA "old Dude") We had a liaison guy from our toolroom that worked with the test mechanics and I visited a test cell with him. While Buick didn't use the 3.4L DOHC examples did see time in our cells in the early '90s. Mark spent almost a year working with the group and was only relieved of the association when GM decided to dump the troublesome version for the simpler OHV 3.4.

Oh hahaha my bad, thanks. OP, does the 3.5L ecoboost have a 10-speed trans behind it now?

Re: Didn稚 know buying a truck was so hard

I believe the 3.5 was the first to get the 10 speed in 2017, the rest of the line up got it in 2018.

Re: Didn稚 know buying a truck was so hard

What makes you say the 2.7L was designed more robustly? The extremely narrow bearing journals? The higher specific output, requiring more boost and cylinder pressure? Those engines are great for commuter trucks that rarely go WOT, but even Ford specifically directs their dealers to ensure customers AVOID this engine if they plan to tow often. It's just not good at handling sustained full load.

I'm not gonna say who we is, in this instance. I work for a tier 1/2 supplier, testing our OE internal engine parts. They have primarily failed in durability testing (hundreds of hours of full load) due to piston failures (cracked crowns/lands) or spun main/rod bearings. Some dropped valves and random oil leaks also. I'm not saying its a bad engine, as they've proven decently reliable in the trucks. But I'd say: don't abuse them, or try to aftermarket-tune for more power.

Mainly due to CGI block material. But there are many other design cues as well that can be argued are much more robust then the 3.5 architecture. This was a good overview article from SAE when the new 2.7 came out in 2015.

Ford's new 2.7-L EcoBoost V6 designed for lighter aluminum F-15

Were your tests on PR or MP engines? I've worked over 25 years with an OEM (not Ford), so I'm very familiar with the R&D process.

I'm on my second 2.7 truck, both tuned, both driven hard, both towing on a regular basis. I've had no issues. Nor have I heard of any issues in the field. I know several high-mile 2.7's with no issues, one approaching 350K.

Failures happen on all engines, but I don't think the 2.7 is any more prone to a durability failure than any other engine. In fact, I would bet on the opposite, simply because of the way the engine was designed.

Picked up the truck and very happy with the deal and the dealer.Bascially a fully loaded F 150 XLT 4X4. Wife even likes the seats and the ride. Only downside is the Ford Military discount which is above the dealer. Unlike most military discounts where you show proof of service Ford has you visit a website "IDme fill out all sorts of info and then they will issue a coupon you take to the dealer. I followed the instructions but no coup[on was issued to get the dealer reimbursed but I can bet I will be receiving all sorts of internet garbage from that site. Either give a military discount or don't. As you can guess I'm not much on playing games. Anyway the truck is nice and the 3.5 engine smooth and responsive

Re: Didn稚 know buying a truck was so hard

My last trip out car/truck shopping still has me laughing!
I stopped to look at was on the lot, just wanting to check some things out and get a look at the price posted on the sticker.
The sales lady came out, I thought great she can point me to the row of trucks with the things I want instead of looking at each row till I find them.
Wrong answer, she didn稚 even want to direct me to what I was interested in until I went inside and give her all my information and talk about what I wanted and was willing or able to spend and how I would finance everything then she would show me what I wanted to see or as she stated it what she thought would fill or fit me needs.
This sales person actually got rude when I told her I don稚 shop that way, you tell me where the vehicles I知 interested are, I look at them then if interested in buying I値l come in and talk price, when we settle on a price you will get any needed information at that point. She responded that they it doesn稚 work like that here and I must come in first and do things thier way!
Laughing at her at this point I told her that she will never get my money with her attitude and a sales plan like that as I started heading for my current truck to leave. She got even more upset asking me where I was going, my response was someplace they will give me better treatment as a customer and I can buy the truck I want!
One week later I stopped with my new truck to let her know that her competition understood much better that it was my money they wanted and by doing it my way was the only way to get it and they didn稚 get anything more than my first name until after price was agreed upon and I wanted a test ride to ensure I was going to be happy with the truck.

She was stunned and seemed very confused by the reaction of her manager when I told him that could have been your sale!

Similar experience here. Buying my '19 F350. Went to the local. Had exactly what I wanted configured/selected and was ready to buy. Wanted to drive some options first. Sales lady was great. Drive what you want and we'll talk when you are ready. Her manager, not so patient. Was forcing her to push me to what they had in inventory. She ended up quitting over it. Called me and told me the story. Said she handed off my info to another sales guy. Never heard from him. Fast forward 3 months, after I got my truck from another dealer. Showed back up on that lot to look at an SUV (and buy) for the wife. Sadly, they had the only one within hundreds of miles that fit our requirements. Truck dealer temp plate still on the front of the new truck. Experienced sales guy asked how come I didn't get the truck from them. Told him the story (Tried to buy from your team but clearly you didn't want my business.) and he seemed to be truly shocked. I'm not sure why. Walk in the showroom and 90% of the sales staff has their noses in their phones. Worked okay for us tho. Love the dealer we got our truck from. After sales service is great too.

I bought a '19 F350 two years ago and it was rather frustrating. Nearby dealers stocked tons of short bed F250s and all had a couple of either totally stripped down white f350s for contractors or totally loaded ones for almost $100K but there is no way I am hauling around a couple of bird dogs around on leather seats again (they might like it but they sure can make a mess of it). I did find that expanding search results to the more rural areas gave a lot more options for more practical trucks. Found a 350 dually with cloth seats but the console with the 360 degree cameras and factory bedliner and hitch installed that fit the bill perfectly.
