Driveway options?

Xfaxman - you are in desperate need of contact with - Tim the Tool Man Taylor. He can surely fix you up with the power needed for your low slung car.

You should then be able to burn those rear tires right off their rims. Horn - H**L - the scream of the exhaust will give fair warning of your impending arrival. You will need rear wheel brakes just to steer the thing. You could be the terror of every neighboring mother with a young son. Your story - H**L - your mortal epithet, would be written in the rubber dust off the rear tires - and the wispy smoke trail left in your wake.

I envision the making of an urban legend - only rivaled by such as Superman & perhaps, Wonder Woman.

But my fingers ache and my mind parches - so now, I shall rest. Sally forth 'oh ye young Lochinvar.............

I haven't read through all replies, but my driveway is 520ft. Halfway is a large garage. I had it asphalt paved. It's the drive, a parking area and under two overhangs. I forget exact square footage, I'm guessing it was about 8-9K sq.ft.
It was by far the best thing I ever did. Cars stay clean, easy to walk on, roll a jack or cart or toolbox on. Concrete is ok, but I chose asphalt as it doesn't show stains (oil drip, etc).
Two garages have a concrete sidewalk, one a slight ramp up to it.
I would never go back to gravel or stone. It's been fantastic. We also had a foot of snow recently and so easy to either push off with tractor or hand shovel. Once Sun hits black asphalt it melts well also.

I'm a car guy with a gravel driveway also. Still paying down debt on the property purchase / house build, before I can get into something special like a vette. So for now my tastefully modded VW's will have to suffice. No sticky tires, but of course I want them to stay clean, and ding-free.

My driveway is about 1000' feet long. I just.... drive slowly. How is that not an option here? Go 5 mph. Who cares if it takes you 2 more minutes to get to the road or back? Just plan accordingly.

Good clean stone, kept pot hole free, and with the right crown/drainage, and gravel is definitely a compatible option for any type of car. You just have to slow down.

Or, you can spend eighty thousand dollars. Its you money, so whatever.

Yeah! haha. Save the speed for the pavement (well, ideally, the track).

/ Driveway options? #46
So my driveway is about 3/4 mile long. I hate that it is gravel, albeit well maintained and in great shape. But my poor Camaro... I can hear the ticking of gravel no matter how slow I go due to the drag radial tires. I am considering a new Corvette but I have to do something about this driveway before that bad boy comes home.

Chip and seal? Paving? What do you think I would be looking at for cost? Thoughts?

If you can find it locally buy 1/4" crusher run limestone and lay it down 1" thick. It packs down like concrete and leaves a nice finish. Easy to regrade every spring to keep it flat and nice.

Gravel driveway means lower property tax.

Tar and chip = tar and ****

I find my driveway is easier to plow paved. I have a rubber edge on my rear blade but it really isn't needed. Also as someone else said, the sun hits it and it melts off better. We lived where were at for about 22 years and it wasn't always paved. Not the end of the world we got along fine but it is nice. Its not just a car thing but you would this time of year during a lot of freeze thaw cycles it would get very messy. Your vehicles track it in the garage, then in the house. Having a paved driveway means a lot to me but is far from the most important thing in my life.

 Now that scares me! But I do remember what it is like to burn rubber as I had a new 1967 Corvette Stingray with a 327 and a four speed. Traded it in on a 1969 Mako Shark, 350ci/350hp.

I did consider converting the chain drive to a 10 speed, but didn't get a roundtuit :(.

Xfaxman - I saw you sitting there and a moment of pure foolishness came over me. So - is that a toy for your grand children or what YOU use when out & about on the property.

I don't want any of you guys to get me wrong - a hard surface driveway, I'm sure, is very nice. In my case it would have to be asphalt. The base requirement for concrete would shoot the costs to the moon.

A couple things that I have learned here on TBN. Obviously - for me, the exceedingly high cost of a hard surface driveway. AND the horrendous costs associated with the construction of a new outbuilding - barn/garage/shed.

I have no idea what asphalt costs in our area here. But if it's $3 per sq ft - my mile long driveway with a 10 foot wide asphalt surface would come in at $158,000. And that would - probably - not include base preparations. My main thought here - I have a vehicle designed to play in the mud - Jeep TJ - I sure don't need as asphalt driveway with that type of vehicle.

If I were to propose to do that - I have a couple of good neighbors who could probably get a court order to have me evaluated for residency at Ea WA State facility for the mentally ill.

Really - my current driveway is more than adequate to my needs. I've always wanted a large pole shed but the cost there - in my case - are simply cost prohibitive also.

Being realistic - my five bay carport keep all my toys & tools out of the weather but a guy can alway dream..............

I got the Adult Pedal Car for exercise going to the mailbox a half mile down the driveway. I started by riding 1/4 and walking 1/4. Guess what? Now at 78 years old, this is what I use.

My God - I do not believe it - somebody OLDER than I am( 76 ). Oh, well - AGE is only a mind game when you get to be as wise as we are - Right Xfaxman.

That is one very nice looking Ranger. I don't have a pic of my "go everywhere" vehicle - - its a blue 2002 Polaris ATP(All Terrain Pickup - the little bed in the back will dump). I use to walk all the way down to my mail box - one mile each way. Now, I have many excuses. It's just too far - this time of year the driveway gets icy and I could fall - its cold - and the TOPPER of today - there isn't usually any important mail anyhow - it can wait until tomorrow.

Just so I don't have to do an internet search - how long before a needed recharge - about how far can it go on one charge.

If I went all the way around my 80 - fence line check - and back - probably 2, maybe 3 miles max. Will it go that far?

It looks like it has a small bed in the back - like my Polaris. Could I put my 3000 watt Honda generator in the bed?

Lots of times I will load on - Honda generator and a couple corded tools - doing jobs way out on the property.

Why a battery version over gas or diesel?

The entire truth of the matter - I can get to only about 75% of my property with the M6040. Vertical drop valleys - a moat to cross(got to kind of float across the moat - light or heavy, tractor going across the moat will best be located in Oblivion ).

Man - I REALLY DO like the look of that Ranger. Anyhow - thanks if you can answer my ???

Time till recharge depends on usage. As far as how far can it go on one charge, Polaris claimed 50 miles (under perfect conditions), but 25 miles was more like it.

Easily, even rough terrain like steep hills.

Yep, small dump bed, 500 pound rated capacity

Lots of times I will load on - Honda generator and a couple corded tools - doing jobs way out on the property.

Our first UTV was gas, traded in on diesel because I had a 100 gallon diesel supply tank. Wife said diesel was too noisy so traded it in on the EV. No more waiting on glow plugs, just get in, turn the key on and go.

Wow - thanks again Xfaxman. That info is a really BIG help. Strange but the spec sheets I can access on the Polaris site gives NONE of the info you provided. There must have been something pretty serious, up that tree, that your Ranger wanted to get at. So far, I've not tried that with my Polaris - but you never know.

NICE - the two pics of the bed show it to be, at least, 2X the size of mine.

Flashpuppy a driveway of that size guessing at adding about 2 to 3 in of stone fine grading and paving should not exceed $65000 to $68000 finishing with 2 in compacted sm9.5al mix IM 19 would be cheaper stronger but not as pretty. Around my area 9.5al which is used on parking lots less traveled city streets state secondary roads. 9.5d the non polished version is used on more heavily traveled roads is the same price. Roads like US 58 used 12d another non polished mix with larger stone would be used on roads like US 58 is a little more pricey but would be of no benefit for your usage. Hopefully this helps

Tar and gravel chip and seal whichever name you prefer would save off of the numbers above about 15 to 18 thousand dollars but it does require maintaince ie recoated every 3 to 5 years

I'd figure a way to trailer that Vette the last 3/4 mile before spending bucu bucks upgrading that gravel driveway. Surely you can figure this out and solve your problem for a few thousand bucks instead of tens of thousands. As for the Camero--why bother? It's a Camero, not a Vette.

Good luck

You're suggesting a "car guy" slow down?!?

Why not. My take on it is if I was driving a Ferrari, Lambo, Pagani.... I'd want to be driving slowwwwwwwwwwwwwww so everyone could see me. If I drove it fast, it would only hasten the end of the ride.

:D

I'm not sure if I'm understanding your terminology.

Are you suggesting that a single 2" layer of asphalt is sufficient (on a prepared base)?
