There has been a discussion over on Welding Web about welding pipe with dual shield. I didn't realize this was done. So I did a little reading, and came across a video that Jody made. They used Lincoln 71M dual shield. I didn't know dual shield came in .035". So I ordered a spool.
WOW! This stuff is childs play to run! I ran the flat at 23.0-volts, and 145-AMPS. The vertical up just for fun I ran it at the same settings. I'm very impressed with this wire!:cool:

Yeah that stuff if fun to run give nice welds I use a mix 75 25 works good!.

And the wire has some pretty good specifications to it also! :thumbsup:
I think this wire would work great in the average home owners Mig welder.

So far I have been very impressed with this Lincoln Mig. V350-Pro.

I think this wire would work great in the average home owners Mig welder.

I'm fairly new to dual shield, but I really like it also!

I worked in a fab shop in the 1970s. We switched from Mig to all dual shield. I ran a lot of it then. When I went back into construction, in the early 1980s Lincoln came out with Innershield. Boy I ran tons of that stuff!

I've only played with a couple Everlast Migs. They were both 120-volt. PM Mark with Everlast, and ask him. Mark is as honest as the day is long!:cool:

I have a customer now that we've been going back and forth with about dual shield. He's tried different brands and settings. His latest is matching up
ESAB 710X-M and Lincoln Ultracore 71A85. He feels ESAB has the edge at least in .045". But yes, the units will work well. He seems to be very happy running it. He was using smaller rolls and for some reason there was an issue with the 8" adapter drag "nipple" that engages the roll being too long for the dual shield rolls and being fine for solid wire. Shave a little off and it works. He's experimenting and learning how to use dual shield. But the pictures he sent look respectable. I'll find them and post them if you want.

Let me preface all of this. I am not a welder, I have no clue what I am doing and the only way I know how something is welded properly is that it doesn't break on me in the first 30 seconds of use. But I also like to learn.....

So got a super stupid question. I am kinda understanding why this welding process exists (stronger weld over larger distance seems to be the most basic answer that an idiot like me can understand). I went and watched a chuckee video on the process and was watching the guy doing a fill toward the end of the video. Moving back and forth across a 1"gap.

What I am confused by is that this process lays down slag like a stick weld. By the time he starts to cut back, the slag looks to have already hardened. Isn't this a no no? He is welding on hardened slag (at least in my opinion, I don't put my fingers on to test if it is indeed hard but). Maybe I misunderstood my stick welding basics but I always thought you were not supposed to weld on slag cause it would make your weld porous.

FC wire is hollow that's to cover the new weld, and one thing about this is it can weld large gaps!

He is welding on hardened slag
I watched the video. Far as I could tell he chipped, and wire brushed after each weld.
Only time I ever push anything that produces slag. Is going vertical up hill. Other than that I drag it. Being right handed, I start on the left, and travel to my right. Drag it.
Look at dual shield, as the best of both worlds. Slag, and gas coverage!
