Brad, I gave some thought to the rental but I'm not a good candidate for rental - I do too many things on the spur of the moment. I'm looking for long-term use. I actually started out looking for a cheap dump truck. I've found some (on EBay and various trader sites) for as little as $1500, but too far away. That would be perfect for my on-property use. But then, I started thinking about how useful it would be to pick up mulch, to make trips to the landfill, etc., and that means registration and insurance - too expensive for how much I'd use it. A trailer, on the other hand, is covered in my insurance, and the plates are cheap.
I also have several trailers already - a single axle car hauler (for small cars), a double axle car hauler, a single axle open utility, and a beat-up old double axle closed trailer that I use for storage and kid myself that I'm going to fix up some day for road use.
While we had the rented tractor/loader/backhoe on site, we tried using the double axle car hauler to haul brush, usung the backhoe to swipe it clean at the dump location. But, my son-in-law got a little too enthusiastic with the hoe, came down a little too hard, and bent the frame. I can fix it, but it will have to wait until I get the shop built, get a loop embeded in concrete to chain it down, and then use the porta-power to straighten it. If I had thought of it at the time, it would have been easier to flip it over and use the back hoe to push it straight again...but, that's the trouble with rented stuff. It's never around when you need it.
