Brad, I gave some thought to the rental but I'm not a good candidate for rental - I do too many things on the spur of the moment. I'm looking for long-term use. I actually started out looking for a cheap dump truck. I've found some (on EBay and various trader sites) for as little as $1500, but too far away. That would be perfect for my on-property use. But then, I started thinking about how useful it would be to pick up mulch, to make trips to the landfill, etc., and that means registration and insurance - too expensive for how much I'd use it. A trailer, on the other hand, is covered in my insurance, and the plates are cheap.

I also have several trailers already - a single axle car hauler (for small cars), a double axle car hauler, a single axle open utility, and a beat-up old double axle closed trailer that I use for storage and kid myself that I'm going to fix up some day for road use.

While we had the rented tractor/loader/backhoe on site, we tried using the double axle car hauler to haul brush, usung the backhoe to swipe it clean at the dump location. But, my son-in-law got a little too enthusiastic with the hoe, came down a little too hard, and bent the frame. I can fix it, but it will have to wait until I get the shop built, get a loop embeded in concrete to chain it down, and then use the porta-power to straighten it. If I had thought of it at the time, it would have been easier to flip it over and use the back hoe to push it straight again...but, that's the trouble with rented stuff. It's never around when you need it.

I tend to be the same way spur of the moment. Just can't afford one yet and stumbled across that option. I have approximately 4 19 yard dump trucks of fill that my brother said that I can have off of his property but would cost more to hire someone to haul then to buy new so i was thinking of doing it myself with a dump trailer. Also i have a renewing source of fertizler that I bring on my prop and use as a mix to make the soil better.

I too thought about about the rent route, but bought one instead. Here's my thoughts about dump trailers after having it about 5 months.

I bought smaller than your looking at, (6x10,7000#).

My BX22 fel just clears the sides for loading.

Its lite enough to use in the yard with brush and pull with the BX22.

My truck, (chevy 1/2 ton) only has a 4.3 and just maxis it.

Just hauled 7 loads of 411 stone yesterday for nephew. Averaged 2.5 ton a load.

I have to think small, (BX22-10"bucket, 4.3 truck, 1.2 acre) and love it all. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Works great and use it alot.

I generally think small, too -- I have a TC18, for example. The same company I cited above also makes a 7' x 14' for a litle more money. I thought I was thinking small. I'd be willing to go smaller if I could save $$$. Frankly, I don't currently have a truck large enough to haul a dump trailer loaded with stone or dirt - mulch, trash or brush is my limit. Most of my use would be on my property, where the tractor would be doing the pulling.

I had the fear of renting one because I know I would have overloaded my 1500 Dodge but know that I have a F350 I am not worried about that. I think that I am gonna get one in the future and resale it when I am done then I don't have to rush to finish projects.

Anything less then that it will just not have the kind of build quality you would probably want. A good hydraulic setup will cost a good portion of that. I think about what I would charge to build something along those lines and it would certainly be more then that figure to make it worth my time. I have seen the EZ Dumps in that size for well over $5500.

I am almost ready to drive to FL to buy one of those trailers. I am in the market for a 6x10 @ 10K GVWR for hauling firewood to clients. Looked at two different distributors at the recent Fryeburg Fair and they want $5000. I think someone else mentioned that prices here in the northeast are higher. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Spending $350 for gas still saves me a bundle.
