I don't like the kill switch. The choke will stop a saw just fine. It's way too easy to leave the kill switch off and flood your saw the next time you try to start it.
I did basically like your bottom picture but just with a simple clip with tin snips and pliers to fold the flap out, left the flap to keep the exhaust going forward, the louvers on the side I left alone.You didnt remove the outer deflector to remove the inner small restriction pipe? Just 2 screws hold outer on on older muffler.
Watch opening the sides like it sounds like you did. Will blow hot exhaust right on the plastic brake handle and possibly melt it when being used alot.
Reason for opening the front of the deflector.
Then my newer 501 muffler on how I do front deflector after remving that little inner pipe.
