Ut oh,,, what ya making now Bruce?

I have recently acquired the Gravely disease and have 2 mid-60's Super Convertibles. While I like "old stuff", I have to admit I have been wishing for a more useable piece of equipment. I love the idea of repowering one of my C8s! But, I have to admit to being somewhat overwhelmed - there is so much info depending on which model Gravely, which engine you want to use, etc. I am kind of lost at this point.

What basic steps would be involved in putting something like this:

Robin Subaru Horizontal Engine 13 5 HP OHC 1" x 3 5 32" Shaft EH410YD0011 | eBay

on one of my C8s?

I am not afraid of fabrication and "re-engineering". I have a 14" South Bend lathe and a Bridgeport and know how to use them.

Are there other engines that would be an easier fit? Is there an "easiest"?

I know, I have lots of questions!

Thanks,
Wally

I think there was discussion in the thread about similar engines? Most "modern" engines use a standard bolt pattern, and all one needs to do is compensate for shaft length.

I am picking up a 9HP Subaru today just a few miles from my house. Smaller than I wanted, but it is new and I'm getting it for $200 - really can't pass it up. Figure I'll get my feet wet with it anyway.

I know that what I'm asking has been answered, it's just that all of these different repowers/threads run together and I get confused. So, since I have a C8 with a Gravely engine, I need something like a "Kohler adapter", a spacer, and a gear to fit the shaft of my engine that will work with the 3600 RPM speed?

- Can I make an adapter out of steel plate?
- Can I get a gear and bore/broach? (I think this 9HP might have a 7/8" shaft)

What am I missing?

Thanks,
Wally

Well 11 or 13 hp would be better as the engines are not run at 3600 rpm but 9hp should work for bout everything cept snowblowing, it would likely work for that also it just might be slow? I have a 12hp Kohler and its rare for me to be at full throttle except for snowblowing.

I know Bruce (gravelymay) uses a Kohler plate and then an aluminum spacer, he has also made the adapter gears for the L models, if you dont have the tools or access to them PM him he was making parts for folks. One could make the spacer with just about anything but the key is to keep everything lined up,, the gear, well others have written their ideas/approach in the thread.

Well Wally it has been a year
and I have not heard from you or any one else.

Sadly, my Gravelys - and all other projects - are sitting idle while I get my new shop together. I am so close... I have a few more gas line connections for the radiant heat (woohoo!) and a little painting to do.

Once done, I will have the shop I've always dreamed of! As far as the Gravelys, I am leaning more towards selling one of the C8s and getting a 526x or other model that already has a Kohler on it. Still looking for something to use the little 9HP Subaru for... Maybe a log splitter.

Thanks,
Wally
