Dear Bob,

I'll just hope that those aren't famous last words.

In a nutshell, leaks. Blowing snow that melts, rainwater that gets blown in, etc.

Mostly, I just wanted you to have a heads up in case you do get a leak, that you might want to consider removing the old cellulose and replace it for fire hazard reasons.

Someone else here on TBN had a thread where the cap on the roof was not sufficiently broad for his winds, and he was getting snow blowing up the metal roof and into his attic space.

All the best,

Peter

Oh, they are setting the brick course using a string stretched between 2 boards.
We now have the attic insulation complete, another layer of mud (2nd) on the sheet rock joints and about 1/2 the brick. The mason's actually came on Saturday and the sheet rock guy came on Sunday. I hope to be finished in 2 weeks, but I would not bet on it.

Progress continues. All the brick is up, except the front wall. This is half bricked and since the wall is 80% garage door, another day should do it. We are also putting a 16 inch high platform under the woodstove. This keeps the flames up high in case of a gasoline spill. There is no code for this, but it seems like a good idea. Gas water heaters are required to be raised on platforms for this reason.
The sheet rock work is done and painting should start tomorrow. It probably will not since we are expecting an ice storm that will last most of the day. This usually brings things to a complete halt.

I did not take any pictures today.

The painting was started and completed today (two coats), so I am starting the final wiring. No pictures today because of the rain and my memory.

I finally took some pictures today. I have all but one light working inside. One had a broken bulb socket when I opened the box. It is nice to have lights in the place, it seems to come alive. I have most of the outlets in and working. I hope to finish most of the electrical tomorrow and I am pretty sure the masons will finish the brick. As you can see the front wall with the big garage door is almost done and that is all that is left of the outside brick.

You can see the I beam in the right side of the inside picture. It is about 4 feet in the ground and very firm. I will mount my vice on this.

We still have to put some concrete slabs outside and stairs on the back. Can we finish this week?

Bob rip nice hope you enjoy it a lot. Do you intend on cutting back the trees form it? The shade in the summer time would be nice but during the winters or a wind storm might cause damage. I don't have any trees real close to my garrages except one and it has a walnut tree in front of it, and I hate to cut it down my grandpa planted it a long time ago. The leaves from the trees in behind my lower garrages blows on top of my garrage and stop up the gutters, I know that you can put a guard over them to keep out the leaves but if I was doing it again I would use a different gutter. I saw pictures of one set up that was a peice of aluminum with slots cut in it that would spread out the water as it came off of the garrage and another kind of gutter that had a cap that would let the water flow in them but the leaves would wash over the top of the gutter and fall to the ground. You probably already know about the improvements in gutters but I thought I would mention it just in case. The leaves that I mentioned earlier blows out of the mountian, can't stop that from happening. Move in day getting closer.

WoW!

That's a beautiful shop, definitely something to be proud of. I was wondering about your lights, did you put them all on one switch, every other one on a switch?

I have 15 lights. The 3 halfway back from the big door are on a three way switch, so they can be controlled from either the people door or the small garage door. The other lights are grouped in two's. Two on the left, two in the middle, and two on the right, for the front half of the garage. The back section is setup up the same way. This way I can light a quadrant of the garage with various levels. The total wattage of all lights is around 960 and I did not want to run that a lot. Of course the temptation is to turn them all on when you go in.

The brick was finished today and all of the electrical is done except the outside lights. Tomorrow we put in the garage doors and start grading for the outside concrete.

I don't plan to cut down anymore trees, but I will keep an eye on them. Sometimes they die after you disturb the roots. I probably have 30 trees within falling distance of the garage, so which ones do I cut down? I have flip clean cutters on my house and can clean 400 feet of gutters in 10 minutes. I may put these on the garage, but maybe I can do without gutters. I will have gravel against the garage on the uphill side (towards the house) and who cares about the down hill side since the water will run away.

They put in garage doors today. They put in garage door openers, which I had not planned, but what the heck.
Tomorrow we clean the floors and I can start moving equipment in.
