Rake Harley rakes - why so much?

MLB, my understanding is that the T models only have one hydraulic function which is the angle adjustment for windrowing. That is something that is in someways to its favor. Mine has a set of solenoids that divert flow via a switch mounted on my tractor. Position one with no power at the solenoids defaults to the roller hydraulics allowing you to lift the roller assembly right off the ground if needed. The second would be the angle (windrowing) function and the third being the lowering/lifting the scarifiers. The amount of work this thing saves you is unbelievable. Sometimes what would appear overwhelming for even the Harley is quickly resolved in one pass. It's almost like magic. I'm not trying to sell you one, but let you know just how helpful mine has been. WOW! thanks for the pictures. I've been considering a Harley Rake for some time but you just convinced me!

A few Questions.

I see the T6 requires 22 to 35 horsepower. The T8 35 to 70 hp. Is this Engine HP or PTO HP?

Would a L3134 with 35 engine HP and 27 PTO hp run a T8?

Doing primarily residential, what would you guys recommend? the T6 or T8?

Mike, I will certainly let Derek answer this question more accurately. My Pro 8 is over 1500lbs. My L3830 HST handles it easily with the loader on for counter balance. I find the PTO HP is really not the issue as the rake really does not load up the engine like say a mower. If I were getting a rake, I might be opting for the T-6 but would really want to give the T-8 a look. I think the HP range may well have more to do with getting a tractor size weight established rather then getting a PTO HP to operate it. MY L3830 does not even know when the rake is loading up, the clutch will slip well before the engines RPM diminishes much. It handles the pulling of the rake very well. HST works exceptionally well with the Pro 8.

When I was looking at the Harley I had phone conversations often with Glenmac corp. The HP listed are for tractor hp not pto hp. As Rat mentioned this is more of a gauge of tractor size than hp. There has been 2 times where I lost power during raking. It was wet material, material was compacted with grasses, the roller was 6" to 8" below ground, with endplates installed there was a huge amount of material being pulled. This only happen twice the first time by accident, the second time for fun /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. I have never seen a pro series other than in pictures but I would think the T series would require just a touch more hp than the pro series due to the carbide roller. In my posted pictures in this thread I never ran out of power, my rpms dropped a few hunderd rpms once or twice. As for residential work I would go with the T-6. You can get into much tighter spaces. The only reason I went with a T-8 is I needed to cover my tire tracks. As far as quality between the T-8 and T-6 exactly the same.

Light bulb on (maybe)--Power rake turns which way?

I've read all these posts and just figured the power rake turns like a conventional roto-tiller--but duh, if it rakes rocks, it has to turn to toss the rocks forward and down the row of teeth to get to the end, right?

So how much dust does it kick up tossing all that stuff forward???????? Ever get any richochets off the tractor????

It probably does not turn as fast as a tiller, especially if you consider tip speed. If its dry dirt, its very dusty. The rocks do not fly out from the roller which spins forward to kick the rocks continually forward. The rocks in fact don't really fly out at all. If I'm grading, I like to build up a little pile of fill material in front of the rake. That has two benefits. I hate to dumb down this thread, but here's my stupid question - does the roller just kick rocks and clumps to the side or are you actually "pulverizing" what goes through the rollers? I've only seen these working at a distance.
Thanks for the pics - they were perfect! Convinced my wife we should rent one of these in the spring. The going rate for rental here is $100 / day $300/ week. I'm thinking of getting it for a week and trying to set up some jobs to make some money back.

The Harley rake will pretty much crush any dirt clods. Rocks or concrete will be kicked forward and eventually off to one side or the other. The Pro 8 has one extra feature and that is a set of spring tooth harrow type rack on front hydraulically mounted to open the soil up. It works very well.

I just got my info from ATI on their rake. The video arrived a couple of days ago. Oddly, the rake looks very well built and designed but quite frankly, doesn't appear to do as good or any better job then the Harley. It's cost is significantly more I think if the web prices are correct. It's a very well built unit.

Thanks Rat, I thought I was losing it. Keep seeing references to scarifiers but don't see any in the video or print ads. Why would they have them on the skid models and not tractors?????? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Mine is called the Pro 8, the original Glenmac/Harley design. It is a 3 pt set up for a regular tractor. The T series like Derek has with its carbide teeth would not need the spring tooth assembly as much. That plus trying to keep the cost down by not only introducing another componet but also the electric diverter valves and other hydraulic componets would be my guess. Rat...

RAT, I just got my stuff from an ATI dealer.
He gave me a good price on the 805 w/ carbide teeth $7300.
He has a demo 725 and wants same money.
The dealer is about 80 miles away and said he would come over and let me demo it.
Only problem is RAIN every 3 days.
It's been pouring most of the night, ditches were flooded on the way to work this morning.

Looks like ATI covered up the roller and working parts more than Harley. Dust control?? Anyone seen one running have an opinion on that?
How much more is the hyd angle model in your size?
How do you angle it manually?

The price on the 805 is w/ hyd. angle and height.
The dealer says it helps control dust a lot.
BTW this dealer is also a landscape company and they use these for all their work.
They used to use preperators but found they were hauling too much (50%) dirt clods away so went to the preseeder.
If it ever dries out I will get a demo.

Hoeman, hope to hear your thoughts and comments about the new rake. If it is better then the Harley then it is the next notch above awesome. Hope it works out really well for you. That price would be in line with the Harley as I recall.

I suspect both rakes will produce plenty of dust.

Per their paper work,
Hydraulic angle = models 605, 725, & 805
Fixed angle = 600 & 800
605 & 805 have standard teeth or carbide teeth.
725 carbide teeth only

The 725 and 805 also have a larger drive chain, #100 vs #80H. From the brochure, the ATI looks rock solid.

see what I mean about a more enclosed roller? I wish someone had used both to compare the dust.

If it helps, the ATI video shows plenty of dust. Enclosing the roller more does nothing to circumvent that. It kicks everything forward. Nothing to the front is enclosed. My mower only has a 2 inch gap at the bottom and the rest is enclosed. It makes more dust then any device I own including my Harley. The thing is, if you use this device in dry conditions, not only will you create huge amounts of dust, but the results are not nearly as good. Thats the way a Harley works and the ATI is virtually identical in the operating design. Moisten the soil first and the results are dramatic.
