Hooking up PTO w/ Engine Running

I run the tractor to make the 3 pt connections. I shut it off to attach to the PTO. I am not in that big a hurry and I feel safer that way. I plan to enjoy my seat time, not hospital bed time.

That is what I do and how all my employees' do it if they wan't to keep their job.

My farm is on a hillside, so there are almost no level places to hook up. This dictates that I leave the tractor running to make the 3 pt connections, as adjustments will be made. Once the implement is attached, I always shut the engine off. Then, and only then, do I attach the PTO shaft. I play guitar and like my arms, hands and fingers.

I like to keep myself in one piece, so the engine is off any time I could touch a PTO or something driven by one. I hook up the 3ph implements with the engine on, but shut it off for PTO hookup.

The BX2230 and my L3130 will allow the rear PTO to operate without the operator in the seat if it is tilted forward.

David Kb7uns

The parking brake has to be set on the JD2520 and the gearbox has to be in neutral for the PTO to operate without the operator.

Depends on the tractor. Our larger tractors have PTO brakes that are engaged when ever the engine is running. In order to turn the PTO to get it lined up you must shut off the tractor. I generally shut off any tractor when hooking up the PTO, but some I'll do with it running. Something like my Ford NAA with the manually engaged transmission driven PTO is VERY unlikely to start by itself, almost impossible I'd say. Now something with a hydraulically engaged PTO there is a chance if hydraulic pressure is lost it could start by itself. Those are also the tractors with PTO brakes often, so I just shut them off.

My2320 is electro-hydraulic. I have to put the PTO mode lever to mid only to turn the pto shaft. I am guessing the pto brake is ahead of the mode selector so the brake works on all modes. I have also seen tractors that would have the pto turning with it disengaged and the engine running(warped clutches?) I really don't want to find out how warped they are with my hands!

I definitely turn off my tractor.

Now, I routinely run the pto when augering grain, without me in the seat. I need to be outside of the tractor watching the auger and making sure the grain is flowing properly.

I believe that's something that smaller tractors can't do without bypassing the interlock....

Most (not all) small Deeres have an offseat PTO capability, so no bypassing the interlock. As far as other CUTs...can't answer.

As far as hooking up the engine running...no, I don't.

Kubotas do (or at least our L3830 does).
Never used the rear PTO on the BX2660 so cannot say for that one and the B7500 doesn't have any operator presence shutoff mechanisms.

I have to have the engine running to align the 3 points. Once the implement is hooked, I shut off the engine, make the necessary adjustments and hook up the PTO. Done that for several decades without any problems.

I've changed my ways after I read about someone being maimed who got his hand stuck in the pto while hooking it up. Now I hook up the 3PT, turn it off and then hook up the PTO. I've always turned the PTO shaft on the implement to align it.

I've always turned the PTO shaft on the implement to align it.

So have I...with the standard 6 spline PTO stub shaft, shouldn't take more then 1/6th turn to align the splines.

Guys that attach a pto shaft with the engine running are usually called "Lefty" or "Stumpy" :D

The other day my SIL was hooking up the rear PTO on his new tiller. He left the engine run. I told him I "normally" shut down the engine when I hook up the PTO. Safety first.

How about it....do you shut down the engine when attaching your rear PTO implements?

Engine ON while attaching lower 3pt arms.
Engine OFF while attaching PTO shaft to tractor and the upper 3pt link.

I 'm guilty of always leaving the tractor running for PTO hook-up....I know not to depend on it but the tractor does have a seat switch.I hook-up the three point ,raise the implement and rotate the PTO shaft(on the implement) not the stub on the tractor.Kind of scary really ,most of us are alone in the field when doing tractor work.

I am embarassed to admit I never gave it much thought. I leave it running to hook up the 3 pt, sometimes reach around and hit the hst lever a bit to line things up(bypassed the seat switch right off cause am always standing up to do loader work to see the forks) and then while back there after the lower arms usually just do the pto before the top link so it is not in the way. Might have to reach around from here on out and shut if off after the lower arms are done!

Thanks guys for making me think, not a natural thing for me:laughing:

I always turn the tractor off and switch the pto to the other position when connecting implements. Rear implements pto is set to mid. Mid/front implements pto is set to rear. This permits the pto shaft to easily turn by hand to assist in aligning and connecting.

Always when running, with no one in the drivers seat, also my PTO will not work if no one sitting in seat.
