Hooking up PTO w/ Engine Running

/ Hooking up PTO w/ Engine Running #31
I have to have the engine running to align the 3 points. Once the implement is hooked, I shut off the engine, make the necessary adjustments and hook up the PTO. Done that for several decades without any problems.

I've changed my ways after I read about someone being maimed who got his hand stuck in the pto while hooking it up. Now I hook up the 3PT, turn it off and then hook up the PTO. I've always turned the PTO shaft on the implement to align it.

I've always turned the PTO shaft on the implement to align it.

So have I...with the standard 6 spline PTO stub shaft, shouldn't take more then 1/6th turn to align the splines.

Guys that attach a pto shaft with the engine running are usually called "Lefty" or "Stumpy" :D

The other day my SIL was hooking up the rear PTO on his new tiller. He left the engine run. I told him I "normally" shut down the engine when I hook up the PTO. Safety first.

How about it....do you shut down the engine when attaching your rear PTO implements?

Engine ON while attaching lower 3pt arms.
Engine OFF while attaching PTO shaft to tractor and the upper 3pt link.

I 'm guilty of always leaving the tractor running for PTO hook-up....I know not to depend on it but the tractor does have a seat switch.I hook-up the three point ,raise the implement and rotate the PTO shaft(on the implement) not the stub on the tractor.Kind of scary really ,most of us are alone in the field when doing tractor work.

I am embarassed to admit I never gave it much thought. I leave it running to hook up the 3 pt, sometimes reach around and hit the hst lever a bit to line things up(bypassed the seat switch right off cause am always standing up to do loader work to see the forks) and then while back there after the lower arms usually just do the pto before the top link so it is not in the way. Might have to reach around from here on out and shut if off after the lower arms are done!

Thanks guys for making me think, not a natural thing for me:laughing:

I always turn the tractor off and switch the pto to the other position when connecting implements. Rear implements pto is set to mid. Mid/front implements pto is set to rear. This permits the pto shaft to easily turn by hand to assist in aligning and connecting.

Always when running, with no one in the drivers seat, also my PTO will not work if no one sitting in seat.
