>>I told her it was going to cost $85 to rent a log splitter for the day.

That seems steep to me...I bought mine for about $300(used) from a local tractor dealer. Very heavy duty vertical 3pt type splitter. At $85 day, it won't take long to pay for itself if you can find a good used one for sale....

Hazmat, I think you are really doing pretty good on time considering all of the clean up operations that you are factoring in a cord. Typically I spend a full day felling a acre of either new trail or a new food plot area. I try to leave it for several months after that. Then I buck it and move the 18" sections to a pile for splitting with the FEL. After that the remants are gathered for burning in the winter. When I finally get to splitting it goes quickly but if I factor in all of the work per cord I bet I spend as many or more hours per cord. I just had a Wood splitter deivered from Northern Tool. It was on sale for 1k. 20 ton with a honda motor. Prince valve etc. Much heavier and better hydraulics than the ones I was seeing locally for 900-1250. They even had the shipping on sale at $168 and they put it on a 6 month easy pay billed to my visa for no charge. I'll be putting it to the test this comeing week end. Dave

Dave,
Did you get the 20-ton horizontal/vertical one with the 5.5 HP Honda engine they are showing for $1099 ? They actually show 2 versions of the same unit (judging by the pictures), and I'm trying to decide between the two.
Looking forward to hearing how it works for you this weekend.

Guys here use special buckets to stack in the bucket and dump in a semi-stacked pile.

I'm planning on buying a couple of old hay wagons and taking the wagon to the cutting area and stacking once, then bring the wagons down near the back door for the winter!

That's not bad at all, considering the amount of tiddly work you had to do.

Last month I had a dead 36-inch maple dropped in my front yard. Since I don't have a big saw or a bucket truck, and the tree was in the overhead wires, I had it done. The cutter did it for less than I could rent the bucket truck.

He left it as a mess in the front yard, as I instructed. I bucked it into 16 inch lengths, split them with a maul, sledge and wedges, and tractored the pieces to the pile. I moved about 1-1/2 cords in an easy weekend.

The guy who said "heating with wood warms you twice," obviously had someone else do the work. It's more like five times. <grin>

It was nice to learn that I can still split 24-inch maple with a maul.

When my Dad's splitter bought the farm, he started using his backhoe to split with. He clamped a wedge to the boom and a flat plate replaced the bucket. By curling the bucket/plate the logs were forced against the wedge and split. That'd save a rental fee.

Gee honey, we need to spend $6,500 on a backhoe so we don't have to rent a log splitter. That one will go over great /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

For those fortunate souls who do already have a backhoe, that's a pretty neat idea.

So figure out how to do the deed with your loader. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
