HI,

Cross slope safety seems to be an on going owning/operating concern.

I came across this image on a site related to Unimogs.

Click here to see a tilt table in action

Since the image is called tilt table 10, 20, 30 degrees...I assume that the steepest angle is 30 degrees, and having heard that unimogs are rated for something greater than 30 degrees, I also assume that the truck did not need to use the chains on the table to hold it from flopping over at 30 degrees.

Boy does 30 degrees look steep!!!

Looking closely I see the steepest one, on the top right, is 36 degrees...looks like the check chains are tight at that point.

I'm becoming a believer in the 20 degree max rule of thumb...or was that 15 degrees?

Edit: whooops...I guess I only got the first half of the image...I try to get the second half...

20 degrees doesn't look all that bad in that picture, but 15 degrees sure scares me when I'm on a tractor seat. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The steepest I've been on is probably a 20 degree slope or so. I would never do that with my boss's extendahoe, too much movement with that heavy hoe and it makes me real uncomfortable. My backhoe I feel more comfortable on some tricky terrain.

30 degrees is about a 56 percent pitch or a 6.8 /12 slope. My International can handle about a 35 to 40 degree angle before it completely slides off the hill. No roll bar and no seat belt. just a nice jumping platform. Rat..

Blake, just wait till you try a trackhoe excavator, they tackle really steep stuff. Clear your way while pointed downhill and dig 180 degrees from that. We've had stuff dug to steep to walk. Best of all, very little terrain damage, Rat...

Thanks for the post, now that I know how steep my hills are I won't be able to sleep at night... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

30 deg is pretty steep when your on it. I start getting nervous at 23+ myself.

Having run a Unimog/Schmidt snowblower combo for three straight winters in the early 70's, I can say that Unimogs look and feel top heavy. I am amazed that they can handle 30+ degrees. Makes me feel a little bit better about my tractor on slopes, it does.

RAT, I'm sure I'll come accross a situation where I'll be working with a trackhoe on a steep hill. Hopefully not too steep. How is it that they can go on such a steep hill w/out tipping?

For one, the outriggers are always down. The way that they can dig from any direction is a massive bonus. Their ability to quickly position is great and I would easily suspect that the lower center of gravity coupled with a huge footprint lend well to its hill hugging ability. The new mini excavators have just gotten better and better. A excavating firm north of here up in Redding CA., uses them more and more consistently all the time even though they had many JCB's. When your sole need is to trench, they are tough to beat. The backhoes obvious advantage is its ground speed and the loader of course. Rat...

Check out the photos (link below). This is how we teach track hoe class at work. We simulate going up and down a steel grade on a stone pile. Belive me, when I first did this I didn't like it at all. After a couple times though you get used to it. Amazing what you can go up and down with a track hoe!
