At some point our property was logged leaving behind half a dozen big leaf maple stumps. They are huge. One may be 7 feet I diameter. When maples get cut they sprout new growth. They look overly bushy. Tried roundup with little success. Anyone have other suggestions?

Are you talking about foliar applications? I would use the cut-stump method -- cut off the sprouts and immediately spray the cuts with undiluted glyphosate (41%) to prevent regrowth.*

Steve

* I think the label says dilution up to 25% with water or diesel is OK for the cut-stump method. Or is it 50%?

I've killed some big stumps with road salt. I had some bags that hardened up and just broke it up as much as I could and spread them around the stump.

Mix 41% strength Glyphosate with 25% diesel, and use a paint BRUSH to generously apply it to the freshly cut sprout stubs.

The Roundup is a great idea but do not dilute with water or it won't work. I do not dilute with anything but use full strength concentrate. Cut the branch off and immediately, if not sooner, paint with glyphosate concentrate. That will do the trick and you can search for threads I've done on the process. It's easy and works. It is the only method I use and only rarely does a new sprout reappear.

That's for killing the new growth. To get rid of the old stump you can burn a lot of it with a wood fire and a leafblower to keep the embers going on the stump. I've done threads on the process.

Thanks all. Will try the full blown mix. These stumps are probably 4 to 7 feet wide,

How long have the trees been down, or do you know?

I've taken a few Locusts down and they try to sprout for two to three years afterwards. I just keep cutting the sprouts off and they eventually give up.

If you have deer and other wildlife around, they will love you for doing that. :)

41% Glyphosate diluted with diesel works just fine!
75% Glyphsoate/25% diesel.

In addition to the cut-stump method, you could use the hack-and-squirt method. Use a hatchet to hack into the bark of the stump, then squirt the glyphosate into the cut areas.

Or use a chainsaw to make cuts in the top of the stump.

Fire will work but you need to focus it by taking some scrap tin and making a cylinder around the stump to contain some firewood. Once you get a good burn going with lots of hot ambers, put another piece of tin over the cylinder and let it bake.

That would be the proper tool for the job. On power line R/Ws we used to have 3 guys cutting, and one treating the stumps with a backpack sprayer. You only need to cover the sapwood.

I drill deep holes in them, (a bunch) and put road salt into the holes, what the moose don't eat rots and in a year or so I can break them up piece by piece.

Tordon TRU is pricey -- Amazon.com: tordon rtu.

2.5 gallons of 41% glyphosate is usually less that $40 at Rural King.

Steve

I pay less than $15/qt. locally & it works by just coating the outer sapwood, not the whole stump, so it doesn't take a lot per stump. Glyphosate is sold as a "grass & weed killer", not a stump killer!

I use the 55 gallon drum burning method. There are many examples on Youtube. Your large, 7 foot stump may require two or three burns but it is a simple and effective process and doesn't require back breaking work or expensive chemicals.
