Hydraulic Pump Dead?

Freezing hyd fluid.

Glycent 46 Hydraulic Fluid has a freezing point of -57 degrees Celsius, which is -70.6 F

I don't think anyone was suggesting that the hyd fluid froze. I took it that the water and oil separated and the water froze.

Whatever happened was directly related to temperature because that's the only thing that changed.

Soundguy,
What do you use to catch the oil when you do your change? If I remember right, the 2240 I bought holds 16g.

I normally use the cut out bottom of a 55g drum that fits under the tractor.. sometimes when it's in use elsewhere, i use about 4 5g buckets, and do the bucket brigade thing when I get about 4g in them.

At least than once this has resulted in me getting alot of oil on me as I dropped the drain plug into a bucket, and for some reason couldn't get my hands on the next bucket.. :)

sure took care of that dry skin problem I was having down one side of my body!

That was just a ref to the freezing point of hyd fluid. I haven't been able to find any studies on emulsified water/hyd fluid freezing point, and the harmful results, if any.

Water will help to change the characteristics of the hyd oil to make it less than ideal for the proper operation of pumps and and all things hydraulic operated.

Last question. What do you do to get rid of your old oil?

Most towns have businesses that collect old oil for recycling or burning. It cost me $25 to get rid of a 55 drum of unknown blend of old oil. They came out with their truck and sucked the oil from the barrel. They might be the same people that take away the old cooking oil from restaurants, etc. Some people try and make bio-diesel from the cooking oil.

Thanks JJ.

I pour or pump mine into a 55g barrell, then haul it to work when full.. we have a bulk collection tank there.

I'll check with the mechanics shop at work at the city. If we don't pay to get rid of it, I may be able to do something similar.
