Ann Arbor is dominated by Democratics, but the crime rate is low. Not a large city my any means though. But it much more expensive than surrounding areas.

My country place is 3 hours away, barn full of stuff worth 10's of thousands, and no neighbors anywhere near. The nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away I guess...but he's a bachelor trucker and never home. The next neighbor is 2 miles away. As yet we haven't had a problem - guess the road is too lonely for anyone to even look.....hope it stays no problem. I thought about a camera system - but they'd just steal it as well. If they hit me - they'll have a day or two available to take their time and do it right - nobody will see anything. I've been lucky for about 3 years so far - 2 more to go then I'll be living there with dogs and guns and thank goodness for Texas laws. What I might do -- is setup a motion detector outside that turns on a recording of a growling, barking dog inside......

I forgot to add this before. I have a wireless camera system, basically a pinhole camera.

4 IR LED COLOR Wireless + Receiver Spy Security Camera - eBay (item 230238338131 end time Apr-04-08 19:17:03 PDT)

It watches my driveway and front door for my family when I am out or tells us when the pizza boy is coming!!!:D I have it hooked up to a small color TV downstairs and all we have to do is turn it on and there is the driveway. Considering the price it works very well and has audio. Picture is not perfect, but still good.

I have been looking into a totally passive system when we are gone. I found this freeware progam called Redhand. This system works with a computer and webcam. The program senses pixel changes and snaps pictures. It works well, but it saves to your hard drive. So unless you can hide it the thieve can steal it.

Download Red Hand 1.0 - Red Hand uses a webcam and takes pictures then constantly compares them - Softpedia

This one sends the pictures to your email. Called grabmotion. This would be rather slick even if the thieve gets to the computer and discovers it. I am hoping to get an old 600mhz computer hooked up and use this when I am gone.

grabMotion Download

Of course with these systems you are going to need power and the later a phone line. Personally I think it is worth it if it helps catching the scumbag!!!;)

Hope maybe this helps.

Some points to ponder:

While, there are liberal judges out there, it's a jury however, that convicts and also many times meets out the penalty. I often wonder where some of these juries come from......whose "piers" are they.
While us good hard working folk are "having" to work, bearing the burden (taxes) of those who abuse the system. Many of us just can't afford to take off and serve on a jury. (I've heard so many people claim to have thrown their jury summons away, when it came in the mail)
So, if we're too busy bustin' our butts to make ends meet. Who's serving on the juries? Could it be those same freeloading bums sponging off our tax dollars?

I certainly hope most of ya'll serve when called upon. And, when some Judge and/or prosecutor calls you to follow the letter of the law against some other hard working citizen for shooting some low life wouldbe thief, then you will have already read this: Jury nullification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On another note. There's a man in Pasadena, Tx. who recently shot two thieves (in this county illegally) breaking into his neighbors house. He claims they crossed the line of his property and he had to shoot (caught on 911 audio.) I know there is quite a bit of skepticism due to fact he shot them both in the back, but the point remains; he is not able to live in his own house at this time for fear of his & his families lives.

Are you sure it's the jury that determines the penalty? I've sat on one trial and been dismissed the other times that I've been summoned. We aquited the guy on the one I sat on, so I don't really know what happens after a person is convicted except for what I've seen on TV.

I thought the judge determined the sentence after the jury convicted the person???

I had a break-in to my storage building last August. I had installed a very small alarm system in it. I had gotten it for the house originally because of my Mother-in-law who had gotten out one night at 3AM. She is in the first stages of Alzheimer's. It worked so well in the house, I installed one out under the shed and in the storage house. I called the sheriff's office and they caught him. He was already out on probation for robbery, was out on baail for another robbery charge, had a bench warrant for another robbery, and now had been arrested for mine. He has been in jail since then, and i am following this very closely. I plan on going to his trial and testifying. Because of the alarm system, I was able to watch him doing the robbery nd describing everything he did to the dispatcher prior to the deputies arriving.

I personnaly don't believe that we punish these people enough. I know that there will be a lot of people who will disagree with my feelings, but I believe there are a lot more feeling the same as I do. After a person does something wrong the third time, I think it's time to take much more drastic action. And because we don't that is why it continues to grow. We need to start writing our reps in goverment and letting them know how we feel.

About 4 years ago had someone (and we're very sure who did it but can't prove it) break into our ranch and stole everything that would allow us to ride i.e. saddles, bridles etc. but they left things like power tools, electronics etc. What makes this so bad is in previous months he was a friend. At least we thought that. How and why this happened is like this, person says he's got a horse to sell because he can't afford to keep it anymore. Sells horse, with contract. Starts harassing about this or that concerning horse. Buyer almost gets so fed up almost gives horse back. Luck would have it that buyer talked to right people and found that the seller had already sold horse to another person. So it was a revenge thing. Before that we didn't lock up much but we do now.
BTW; at least for Texas you can paint your fence post (top) purple and by law extends your rights of premise to your fence. i.e. your outside in your front yard and you are threatened/attacked you can apply the same force as you would in your house.

Eddie, a few of the jury panels I've been on, we were able to assess the sentencing as well, but others we couldn't. I don't know what the breakover point is. Perhaps its the level of offense or possibly a determination made by the defense council. I was just recently reading how CSI TV shows really cloud the water for juror. It seems people expect all this fancy forensics to prove guilt.

I agree. Motepoc, for some of these folks, prison is just a vacation.

I guess one of the points I was hoping to make earlier is, until we as a whole, as jurors and as voters, speak loudly enough for our so called legislators & judges to hear. Our rights to protect our property with whatever force necessary will continue to be minimal.

Glad I renewed my concealed weapons permit;)

I don't want mine concealed. Ain't nothin' like the sound of a 12 gauge pump goin' CLACK - CLACK in the middle of the night to deter would be thieves.

I too, have been the target of theft. Middle of the day, car stopped in the road, guy ran in the barn, stole 2 cans of gas. Neighbor saw them, I was in another building at the time. If I had seen them, might have got off a shot or two. ;)

I've had fuel siphoned from a truck, stolen from buildings, neighbor has had fuel stolen. Going to get worse.
