COURTNEY, N.C. - A six-year-old girl remains hospitalized in serious condition after she fell off a tractor last week and was caught under the machine's mower, according to family members.

Jessie Keaton was riding a tractor last Tuesday afternoon when her father, Jason Keaton, was apparently distracted by his five-year-old son, Jason, who was also on the vehicle while Keaton was operating the bush hog. The boy was not injured.

Brenda Jester, Jessie's aunt, described the accident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. She spoke Monday night with Jason Keaton and the girl's mother, Loretta Lynn McGee.

"He told me that it all happened in a blink of an eye," Jester said."All he remembers is that the tractor had run over her and she was under the bush hog . . . The little brother saw that. He was talking to his daddy and got him distracted . . . They were just about done for the day. It just happened so fast."

Keaton immediately jumped off the tractor on his property off U.S. 601 South near the Davie/Yadkin county lines and called 911. Emergency first responders, including members of the Courtney Volunteer Fire Department and the Yadkin County EMS, rushed to the scene. Although critically injured, Jester said that Jessie was still conscious.

She remains at Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem where Jester said she had undergone several operations. Jester said that doctors, despite their best efforts, were forced to amputate Jessie's right leg below the knee, and part of her left ring finger. Doctors, who have kept the girl heavily sedated for most of her hospital stay, were also tending to a large cut to the back of her head, Jester said.

"The worst of it is over," Jester said. "She has another surgeryscheduled for Thursday. Her left foot is still a little iffy and her hands had real bad cuts on the palms . . . But she is really improving. She was more alert and hungry this morning before she went into surgery. Right now, it's just a waiting game. We just hope it continues to get better."

Jester said that the father is inconsolable.

"He's been there at the hospital nonstop. But he's blaming himself," Jester said. "He always had the young-ins with him in the yard when he was working. It was a habit; not a good habit."

Jessie's mother, Jester said, is undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

"She's holding up pretty good," Jester said. "She has not leftthe hospital."

The family has medical insurance. But there's no way to estimate how long and costly Jessie's hospital stay will be.

"It's just like anything else," Jester said. "It will only pay so much."

Zola Murphy, Jessie's grandmother, was emotionally devastated when she first learned of the accident. She said that she still can't get the terrible image of her granddaughter's near-death experience out of her mind.

"I've done cried all I can cry," Murphy said Monday. "She's justa little miracle girl."

Jester said that the family has been overwhelmed by the community's response. So many have telephoned or visited the hospital, she said.

"The people have come down here left and right," Jester said."All of my prayers are working. Jessie is doing so much bettertoday."

For those who wish to contribute to the family's medical bills, an account has been established at the Wachovia branch in Yadkinville. Jester, who can be reached at 961-3505, said that she and Ross Crissman have scheduled an Aug. 2 benefit at Crissman's farm on Lime Rock Road in the Fall Creek community.

Very sad. Makes me wonder about that man's capacity as a father though. I hate to knock someone when they're down but that tpye of ignorance verges on homicidal negligence.

I'm not much for government intervention when it comes to DSS and child services......but if no one is going to take his kids away, then someone needs to take his TRACTOR!

I have mixed feelings on this. I used to mow a friends shop area and refused to mow anytime anyone was in the shop or a car was there(in case they came back for it,etc). I also wish it were possible to get my family more interested in tractors, but the only way would be to have them around them more, which is the problem.
My heart goes out to the father and family. Best wishes for the future recovery and forgiveness.

Tractor running you are?
Then all are out of range of anything that can be discharged, thrown or run over
MY RULES!!!
I have all my kids and grandkids and hope and pray it stays that way
I naver gave rides or let anyone near what I was doing
Rules sometimes seem harsh at times but I would rather be harsh and see my
loved ones than see them in a hospital bed or worse a casket

I take the kids for rides all the time on the tractors, but never when working them, and especially pulling a bush hog. I can't imagine what he was thinking, but unfortunately, it's the little girl that has to pay for his stupidity.

There are some things that you can get away with and if you fail, the worse that can happen will happen to the person taking the risk. When you put others, and especially children at risk, it's criminal stupidity.

I did the same with my grandkids, in my own pasture which was pretty near flat and level.

That's a point we've debated often here. At a local tractor show, there were lots of people riding little kids on the tractors. All going very slow. No implements.

Some feel this is unacceptable. I generally don't do it, but don't see it as any more dangerous than riding a child (legally) on a motorcycle or letting them ride their own bikes in the street.

But not when there is a running implement on the back. Never. Its beyond stupid. And it sounds like this guy had two on there? Ugh.

One of those cases where "an eye for an eye" becomes an argument to contemplate...

When my son was about 8 years old, I started him on our Ford 2N tractor.
His feet did not reach the pedals by a log shot.
When he had to stop the tractor, he would bounce out of the seat and land on the clutch and brake pedals.
To start moving, he would just side-step the clutch and jump right back in the seat.
For a couple of years I rode on the fender until one day I just stepped off while he was driving. His eyes popped wide open! He was in charge of the tractor! what a surprise that was!!
After that, I walked along side for a while. When we were pulling scotch broom, I set the choker and he drove.
When we were spreading manure, I was on the trailer and he drove.
One day, I was riding on the trailer behind the 2N and we were on an incline and the tires began to spin. A '42 Ford does not have a differential lock. But as the rear wheels were clawing for traction, I watched my son casually dab the brakes to equalize traction just as I would have done.
"Austin, where did you learn to do that?" I asked in complete amasement.
"Dad, I've seen you do that a million times" he said.

Friends, please don't give up on our children.
Train them right. Give them a chance.
Please don't produce a generation of over protected panzies.

Now my son is 25 years old and can drive circles around most of us.
Careful and thoughtful training is the key.

My oldest brother takes his kids on the tractor all the time, even as babies, with earmuffs and seatbelts... :D

He made a bench, on which 2 of them can be tied up with ropes. Thats a lot safer than having them running around and having to anticipate on them.

when i'm helping my other brother feeding a bale to the horses in the field, i INSIST that his 2 year old son is with me in the cab, not running loose while my brother is minding the horses while letting me through the gate.
When the kid is in the seat of an enclosed cab, i dont have to watch him. If he's running loose, i dont know where he'll be in seconds.

When im using my cabless 3011, i want all children to be holding mummy's hand, OR being locked behind the wire meshed front garden.

MY rule is: Kids are locked away, OR with me in the cab so i dont have to anticipate on them.

Dang.. That's just awfull.

I'm not defending the father.. but .. I'm quite sure that no punishment that 'we' can think up could be worse than what's he's already going thru.

The kicker is.. that I can rememebr riding the tractor with my grandfather while he was discing or mowing.. did it for hous at a time.. no cares at all.. then riding on the floorboard down the road on the way home.. standing there holding on to the fender...

I think in this case.. both of em' need some prayers.. etc.

I think soundguy said it well.

I would be pretty hypocritical to fault him in what happened, we can all criticize after the fact, knowing how it turned out.

I am sure he will rethink that decision for the rest of his life.
