I hate to see _RAT_ leave but its his choice. I was reading the thread in question and I did not think the comment that closed the thread was that off color. But its not my decision. Maybe the comment should have been pruned instead of closing the thread. 20/20 vision is a wonderful thing. :D

I would rather the Mods err a bit too hard on censoring comments than not. The wifey and I are constantly amazed at the poo the pervades the media now days. We seldom watch the major networks since we have young kids and bad behavior is shown constantly. We turned on the local "news" yesterday to get information about the rain we desperately need. The "news" had one story about some reality show that was on that night. We used to call this an advertisement not news. Then they showed a teaser on the next story which was about some "star" puking food. The teaser showed the "star" puking.

I'll take Family Friendly even if it ticks people off from time to time including me. At least I dont have to watch someone puking on TBN. Even the Disney channels are full of programing that is not Family Friendly. Lots of kids portrayed as adults, adults as morons, and potty humour.

Later,
Dan

The thread has been pruned of the more offensive, juvenile responses.

I guess I occasionally bounce against, and even sometimes trip over the line, but all in all, I think it is great.

Every time I have been near (or probably even beyond) it has been professionaly, quickly, and politely handled, I have learned something, and probably a bit wiser or better person for it.

The tractor information here on this board is unequaled in my opinion. There have been several things that were it not for these boards, I would still be in the dark and frustrated about.

I think part of the reason there is so much participation, and willingness to share knowledge is the tenor or maybe PG rating of the board. Even when you see "flames" here they are for the most part in jest and good humored between the participants.

At least for me, I think the mods do an excellent job. While I certainly do not agree with all the decisions made, I doubt I would do as even handed a job as what I see them accomplishing.

Mike, That's sounds like a better idea. Why not do this( prune the thread of un- wanted or offensive stuff) instead of closing the whole thread b-4 others get a chance to add comments ?

We actually do prune threads more frequently than we close them. I guess it might be a little hard to explain adequately without examples, but in some cases we only have one, or a few, objectionable posts and we can prune those and send a PM to the individual(s). But sometimes there are several responses and trying to prune only the offensive ones leaves some others that would make no sense. So, in some cases, we have to prune objectionable posts and also remove some responses that may or may not be objectionable themselve, but would make no sense if we only removed the post they were responding to.

Of course, I'm sure most folks have heard conversations in person, or read threads here or elsewhere, in which you are just pretty sure no good is going to come of it; i.e., a quarrel is going to escalate, the thread is drifting into or toward forbidden topics such as religion and politics. In such cases, threads may be closed. And yes, it's a judgement call at times. And I won't say we're always right, but we try to be.;)

A couple of other things you might keep in mind:

1) We've got a great bunch of members, so posts that are moderated or threads closed are a very, very small percentage of the ones posted,
2) If something you posted is removed, it actually doesn't cost you a penny, so it's nothing to get upset about, and
3) Even the moderators (or at least some of us) have had posts removed; it's pretty painless.:D

RaT,
I understand where you are coming from.
Anyway, I hope you decide to come back after awhile.

EDIT: self edited because my posts served no purpose.

First I want to say that I really appreciate the moderators diligence to keep posts "clean". I would not accept the job myself.

When I asked about "being too family friendly", it had nothing to do with the obvious violations like vulgar language, political comments, religious comment, obvious attempts to rattle the cage of other posters (which I know I have done a few times) or pictures that were obscene. I can find that everywhere and anytime, that seems more the norm then the exception.

My curiosity stemmed from a thread I started that was closed because someone posted about being a "flasher" for a halloween costume idea and what would happen when you opened the coat which in my opinion was not a big deal, it even me made me think about it being a flasher at the costume party. The post was later "pruned" and reopened. It was in my opinion the best thing to have done. I was in no way mad about the thread, just wondered if others felt the rules a bit tight or perhaps certain moderators were more "righteous" then others.

It makes no difference if I think TBN should be more open in its rules. As was mentioned more then once, its not my place, I am a guest and I can change the channel, something I wholeheartedly agree with. I like lively debate, I love comedy and that is where I and others sometimes cross the line. I don't argue that at times the line might be crossed, sometimes it is caught by a moderator and other times not.

I also mentioned that I find TBN less desireable to visit, maybe its simply because I no longer own a tractor. MChalkey went this way as well when no one was all that interested in his EarthForce tractor postings (his words).

Anyway, TBN is great for many of the new and old tractor owners. I still hope to meet up with RobertN one of these days, he lives on the other side of a lake from me. I will stop by and take a glance at TBN from time to time. Best Regards, RaT, (Mark)

once you're on someones radar, nothing you do is right after that

Ray, I think you're mistaken about that. It's only true if you continue to violate the rules.

As I recall, Mark's Earth Force was of great interest to many folks. He got me interested in the Power Tracs. He and several other posters over the years have gone cold turkey on TBN for many reasons. Those reasons included spending too much time on the internet, no longer owning a tractor, major life changes, disagreements with the management, etc...

So, I hope you do stop by from time to time. I have enjoyed your posts over the years and have learned a lot from your conversations with others on tractors, building and other topics. :)

I remember a couple years back the owners did a search to find out who the most moderated TBN member was. It turned out one of the moderators had the distinction of being the most moderated TBN member at the time.

( I have since changed my evil ways  )
