Not to confuse things, but this guy is operating up from our street... Make it Jinma #4

Anyone have any thoughts on this one? I like the footing, but what scares me about all of these is getting parts...

Anyone have any final comments on the BETST version? They are just south of us... And there is a Jinma dealer a bit closer...

Carl

I like the driveshaft in the Betst, although I wish it was longer and maybe a little heftier. I'd be interested in finding out what kind of driveshaft is in the Tytan. If you take a real good look at these units, the basic guts area of the chipper is just about the same. The Tytan has an adjustable base, a bigger chute, and seems to have better designed guarding. Betst has a pretty good price on EBAY, and a cable type disconnect [even has a foot operated pedal].
You could contact Tytan about the parts, most of the dealers sell at least a basic list of parts. I bet the Tytan, Betst, Jinma, and my unit all have the same flywheel/bearings/pulleys/gearbox/knives. Just the sheet metal and controls are different. The parts list on the Tytan site shows an exploded diagram that is common to all these units, no matter what they really look like.

Heh Dougster, now we have Tytan saying " we took the first chipper to China 13 years ago to be built ". And we have Betst saying they are a pre Jinma chipper, too. Then there is the Jinma, the the copy of Jinma, then finally......my [sniff]....copy of a copy of a Jinma. Sort this all out for me, it's too confusing. :)

I hear you Jerry! My head is still spinning.

All I want to know is when do the recalls start???

Recalls????????

There's no stinking RECALLs with stuff from China.......:p

You got the steel (sort of).
You got the belts (sort of).
You got the bearings (sort of).
You got the knives that will sort of last.
You saved about 3x what a real chipper costs.

You have (or should have) average to above average intelligence in operating this to avoid killing yourself or anyone else.

Now, go out and (as someone else has already said) STOP THE BURN!!!:D

And since when did that stop one "safety recall" of one single item the government didn't want you to have???

That's true, and more so in some states than others. Just keep it for "personal use" only, or modify as needed.

I love it (not really) when they try to HEP us. Makes you really appreciate places like the Lone Star State.

The Lone Star State is a wonderful state. In my previous life, I visited and worked there for extended periods. It almost became a second home... I kid you not! I've even got family there...

But I digress. The issue on the table is a federal safety recall of these horrible, deadly, Chinese chipper devices... and because I got a crappy one at a crappy price, I am officially ALL FOR IT!!! :D

Last Friday I had a local driveshaft company make me a feed roller driveshaft assembly. They used heavy duty components, such as 7/8" square shafting. The square female ends were cut off the original shaft, machined, and pressed into the new yoke [1 1/4" diameter] The sole problem comes about because these beefy components take up space, and space between shaft ends is very limited, as we all know. The unit cost $139 including tax and took them 2 hrs to have ready for pickup. The components were the smallest sizes they keep on hand but perhaps another shop would have a wider selection. What I have now is certainly overkill, which perhaps isn't a bad thing.
I'm more & more convinced that the best long-term fix is to move the gearbox location away from the feed roller shaft ~ 3". I plan to cut off the existing vertical angle leg and weld on a 3x3x 1/4" angle. Torch out appropriate slots for all the bolts, add bracing underneath, perhaps cut the existing bracket so the belt doesn't rub. Problem is finding a mobile welder -- those guys used to be all over the road and now they've disappeared around here
Opinions?

I just got one too (and acknowledge that there are several improvements needed to improve it's reliability and performance). I'm sorry about the condition of how your's arrived.

Fortunately for me, mine hums quietly and does a great job eating everything I've put on it's plate.

As for price.......??? I'm happy having with the price I paid, for what it does, especially when compared to other chippers and their prices.

So.......I personally don't need Big Brother telling me what I can do with my equipment, on my property, operated solely by me. Maybe I'm being naive about the potential risks operating this, but I don't think so.

You'll get no argument from me MadDog. Personal responsibility is a fine thing. I am half joking here... but also half serious. I am not a happy camper about the way that mine arrived. I do not have time for the nonsense of fixing all the damage in addition to the known and necessary upgrades. The latter were factored into my plan... the damage was not. Some damaged parts in particular may pose an unacceptable long-term safety hazard... and I am still debating what to do about it. There are clearly options... but it may be better if I just sell this one "as-is" and order in one of the later generation machines. It will be a hard pill to swallow either way... but I don't have a great deal of confidence & trust in the one I received.
