Loading a Tri-axle dump with L47/M62

I’ll throw out another idea. Do you have a place to store the old asphalt? It has some value. You can either try to break it up in small pieces yourself or rent a rotomill on a skid steer or CTL. A rotomill will turn it into gravel like material. If you don’t need or want it or have a place to put it that’s a bad plan though.

I don't imagine you'll be laying your own hot asphalt, so what about asking the contractor about milling the old? There seems to be a process where they can mill, reheat and oil, then lay the same material. No idea if it's more or less costly than what you've already priced.

I had this done on our private lane with excellent results. It took longer, but little material had to be trucked off site. I think we contractors underestimate the cost of trucking “fill” off site. The pavement “recycling” process vastly reduces waste.

All the old pavement gets hauled back to the plant around here they take it for FREE and recycle it into the new mix......

Reach is another problem you will run into when you have your loader at max height. Your tractor grill will get very close to the truck.

Even some of the largest skid steers have issues getting over the sides of the big boxes! They do build ramps with the material they are often loading depending on how the truck sets. Have also seen them dig a rut for the tires to sit in to lower the side. The boxes on the trucks do vary depending on the make and style. I would think that the M-59 would be the best although I have seen the L-45 reach over but as others mentioned you are not going to dump in the center.

Thanks guys. All great info, recommendations, and ideas. I have one more question about these 2 tractors but am going to start another thread for that.

Here’s my M59 over the side of my 6500 which has sides a little over 50” on it. It’s easily a foot over the sides. You can’t put on a heaping load unless you built a ramp but it’s loadable. IMG_8521.JPG

My suggestion would be to just rent an excavator with a thumb. That will do a much better job of ripping the old asphalt out, AND loading it into a truck...whatever size truck you use.

I find with a tractor, I use it for 95% of the work I need to do, but for some specific jobs, it is just easier to rent a specific machine, for a specific job.

My experience says it will break up the driveway better but loading with it won稚 be fast or fun. If I had an excavator and had a driveway to tear up and load, I would still end up using the loader to load the truck even if I had to build a ramp. By the way I have tried both ways and am speaking from actual experience.

My experience is that the loader may reach over the truck sides but may not have enough clearance to dump the load. May be able to dump the load when the truck is empty but when the pile starts building there is not room left for dumping. I would measure the truck side height and then measure from ground up to the bucket edge when in full dump position. I would think that the second measurement should at least equal the first to be a go.

A push-off type bucket would help a bunch if available for rent.
