Log Splitter

I finally got back to TSC to pick up a splitter. Thanks to all the advice on here, I saved some money. I bought the SpeeCo made Huskee, 22 ton, 11gpm, 6.5hp briggs, 4" cylinder, 14 second cycle time. They had just received a slightly different model with a wider beam and log cradle and didn't even have a price tag on it yet. But the model number was the same as the other 22 ton models on the lot so the price was the same. The paint was still tacky in one area, so it must be fresh from the factory. I put it to use right away. Started easily, ran reasonably quiet, and the speed was much better than I hoped for. Even the larger beam width that I was happy to get and thought I would need probably doesn't matter. It split every knot and crotched log I could find, and popped the straight logs like they were nothing. It actually works better than I thought the largest model would work. Thanks again for all the input on this. While I'm a little disappointed I didn't get to add to my tractor attachments (technically), I did add a ball to my drawbar to haul it when needed. And the $700 I saved by buying the smallest model splitter will now go towards a quick attach snow blade for my FEL.

Congrats on your aquisition! The addition of the trailer ball truly does make it another attachment;):D. Add a ball to the back of your trailer so you can take it along and split out in the woods, and you'll be loaded for bear!

...And, the more you use it, the more you'll be glad you passed up on the Tim Taylor Specials!

Now, just watch were you put your fingers, and keep on splittin'!!!

Glad I didn't get the Tim Taylor special? haha. Yes, I was glad I opted for the smaller one about 5 seconds after I decided to move it by hand, which was about 2 minutes prior to having the ball installed on the drawbar. ;) That thing is difficult to move by hand!

But you gotta admit, it's easier moving this one by hand than the tractor-mounted splitter;) :D

My solution was a 'trailer dolly' - 2 wheel thingy with a hitchball on top and a handle. Stick under the hitch, push down and away it goes. You still have the mass and inertia to deal with but at least not holding up the tongue weight.

Harbor Frieght has them (or did) at a very reasonable price.

I built my own for my bobcat. It is made from parts and steel i just had lying around the garge. It works pretty good for free. I mounted it to forks so once the wood is stacked on pallets, i can move it around with the machine.

A trailer dolly would do the trick. I screwed up and didn't buy one this week when Homier was in town. $29.99 was a "must buy" that I missed.

As Promised ;):p:D They don't look like much, but they earn their keep, and it's all paid for ;)

Anyone have a design for a 3pt mounted one with a hydraulic cylinder for lifting the logs up?

I just finished splitting enough to fill up a 5' high x 14' wide x 20' long section of the back porch. Mostly oak with some elm. Used a 5 hp 20 ton. The cycle time is slooooow. Not at first but after a while it grates on you.

I have no idea how long that sucker runs on a tank of fuel, but working slowly alone, it does about 1-1/2 to 2 face cord a tank. Two people can about double that as a lot of time was spent getting stuff to cut. Between the splitter and chain saw, nearly 5 gal of gas was used. Not bad, 15 bucks for about 60% of the houses heat in the winter.

On edit

One advantage of the tractor mount. Ever pushed the splitter up even a slight hill when the ground is covered with bark and small chunks of wood? Major PITA.
