dig a 3 - 4" wide, 6" deep trench in tilled soil. I've looked at Ditch Witches and they are too expensive for my small operation.

So far, I'm thinkin' a sub-soiler will do the trick with minor modifications.

Do you folks know of anything else that might be able to do this?

Thanks!

Rick, Would reccomend you check out buying a middle buster.
Purchased one in July for 135.00 at my local Kioti dealer. This implement has a single shovel about 10 inches wide and will easily go 12 inches deep. My JD4100 is small (rated 20 Hp) but handles it satisfactorily. And I shud add "except clay hardpan". Oh, and shud add- it is a 3 pt hookup.

Regards

Here are a few pics of a ditch I dug with mine. It was for 4" corragated drain.

One of those middle busters, potato plows or V plows will do this, like others have suggested.

This is another case where a Gravely type rotary plow mounted on the 3 pt would be a great tool. Gravely folks use theirs to dig trenches and post holes and, yes, to plow.

You could also cut a trench with a disc plow, particalary a pair of them mounted to push the soil away from each other. Attached are a pair of mine that that I used to make raised rows. Mount them the opposite way and angled opposite, and they'd dig a trench. Look for disc hiller rigs on Agri Supply or TSC. Got my discs from Agri Supply. They're mounted on the diamond bar of an old soil ripper a friend gave me (and that friend did the clamps for the disc shanks). My little 4010 will pull twin 20" discs opposed 45 degrees. Agri Supply and some other outfits have clamps for the more standard square bars now in use vs. the old diamond bar on the old JD Ms where mine came from.

Thanks everyone for your help! Looks loke a middle buster is what I need. I also like Ralph's disc hiller and will probably get one of those too.

Thanks again!
