Mark you driveway and road

I had a friend who was a member of his the up north there hey volunteer fire department. He said their claim to fame was that they had never lost a foundation. He has a strange sense of humor. He was also the county coroner, when the phone would ring early in the morning he'd say "somebody woke up dead this morning, be back in an hour."

To clear things up a little: Our mailbox on the street is well marked and we always got our mail. Even those in the neighborhood whose painted numbers faded off of the mailbox always get their mail because the mailman comes every day and knows the route well. However, if we get a temporary mailman the ones with faded numbers may have problems.
Our problem comes from those not used to our neighborhood. (UPS, Fed Ex, DHL, repairmen, out of town relatives, etc.) When coming up the road, before they get to my house (with clearly marked numbers), they come to my neighbor's house, (with no numbers) and assume it is my house and go there instead. This is particularly annoying when my neighbor is not home and a relative has made a 4 hour trip to come see me, or a repairman comes out on schedule, and they turn around and leave when no one is home. I think I will buy my neighbor a nice address plaque for Christmas.

While my first concern is the safety of my wife, myself, and our 3 cats, if the house ever caught fire, I would just as soon the fire department stay away.

It is not only for a fire that this is important; remember the typical fire dept runs about 85% of its calls on medicals. A delay in a serious situation could mean the difference of saving a life. Actual "fires" are only about 5-8% of a typical fire department calls.

In regards to fire, at least in this area, it is an issue for a house fire to invlove wildland too. It is not uncommon for an engine to come in to fight the house fire, and another to come in to fight a resulting grass or brush fire. Or, vica versa; an out of control brush pile extends to invole a house, barn, etc.

In most parts of the US, 911 calls will link a landline phone number to an address. Unfortunately, finding that address is not always easy.

When I went to get my septic permit a few years ago, they told me that I need to go to the 911 office for an address. I went there, filled out a form and the next day a girl from that office came out to the site. I had to mark where the driveway would be, and advised that if I ever moved the driveway, they would have to be notified and my address would be changed. She drove back to the beginning of the road and came back again. My address is 498 because the center of my driveway is .498 miles from the beginning of the road. We don't have a sign on our road and the county would not install one because 'it is not a county road', they same reason they would not install my culvert. Of course the county does actually maintain the road because of the school bus using it. The road from the state highway 1.5 miles back to our road is not marked either and the county won't put one up 'just because'.
I really don't worry about the fire dept. finding us because they are about 20 miles away. Our mailbox is marked and the mailman has no problem, neither do UPS of FedX, but DHL couldn't find us without a seeing eye dog.

In our area, private "non-county" roads are up to the owners to mark; all the roads in our "neighborhood" are; we are are 5 and 10 acre lots.

20 miles from the fire station is a fair distance. Reminds me of being farther out in the hills here. Still minutes make a difference if a life is hanging by a thread.

Dusty - you are spooking me out a bit. Your public profile occupation is listed as "shipping clerk". With your quote above I have to ask what do you ship?

NEWSFLASH!!! My $500 camera was just delivered today by UPS to 7225. Too bad I live at 7525 and the package was clearly marked and so is my house. Lucky the neighbor realized the mistake and was honest enough to phone me. :) Sometimes it just doesn't matter how clearly things are marked.

Huge mistakes are one reason I have a post office box...
You see, I live about 1000 feet from the intersection of ******** Road and ******** Avenue.
Both the road and the avenue have the same name and intersect one another, causing all kinds of confusion when giving directions.
When putting my address into Mapquest or other mapping software, the red star shows up over a mile away!

To make matters worse, I live on the county line, and not only does my road have another name for those living across the road, but their addresses only have three digits, while the ones on this side of the road have four digits.

It's difficult to give directions to my house!
