Mail should not be delivered to addresses that aren't properly marked.

OK..... if you say so, it must be true and gospel.:D But why? The mail carriers on the route know who lives where better than anyone else, because they deliver the mail every day. That is their job, to deliver the mail. Our mail is delivered into the rural mailbox by name, not address. If he were to follow your way of thinking, no one in town would ever get any mail, because the mail boxes are all grouped together at the side of the road, and each one has only a name on it. No street name or number. Just a name. That is all that they require, and that doesn't have to be on the outside of the box. Most everyone has it marked on the inside of the door in black magic marker. That is all that the Post Office requires. No street name, no house number, no town or zip code. Just a name.... You know what I mean?? Just put your name on the inside of the mail box door.

I don't have a mailbox in front of my house, only a post office box. I still receive mail in my P.O. box that is addressed to my street address rather than my post office box. The mail person knows where to deliver the mail by my name, not the address that's on it.

I know of places in West Virginia still where you can put only the person's name, city and state on the envelope and the mail will arrive.

If you are a true redneck, then you have numbers cut out from a old license plate nailed to the tree. Depending on the state and how old the plate was that you cut the numbers out of, depends on if it is reflective.:D

I like it!!:)

For a long time, I used an old real estate sign (Century 21 type) that I painted white, and painted the address over it in 12 inch tall numbers with brown paint and a two inch brush.
My wife said it looked tacky and made me replace it.

This is a timely thread for me. In our county, it is now a "regulation" that and address MUST be assigned in order to obtain septic/electric/water permits and hookups. Addresses are assigned by the E911 and ambulance service. We have been trying for several weeks to get them to assign us one, but the guy in charge has been too busy running for a local office.

Yesterday, the "new guy" met me out at the property with his laptop and GPS transponder. He mapped out the main road and each of our interior road "branches" where we plan to build, and the exact GPS coordinates of the homesites. We had to name each of the roads. The satellite images that he mapped everything onto were incredible resolution and very recent! He said that the whole system was enabled by Homeland Security plans and funds. So when/if we call 911, our exact GPS coordinates and the exact map of even our interior, private roads are on the screen in the emergency vehicle.

All very high tech! Not too surprising in a metro area, but this is Jackson Co TN; VERY rural!! I was impressed.

While my first concern is the safety of my wife, myself, and our 3 cats, if the house ever caught fire, I would just as soon the fire department stay away. I have never seen a house that was "saved" that I would want to live in. I would prefer if it happens (God forbid) it burn to the ground, then we'll rebuild. That said, my property is properly marked on the road. For some reason, even though the house is 6 years old, it doesn't show up on any of the computerized maps. Even the utilities locator has trouble finding us -- and they've been here about 8 times for all my different projects.

Mornin Jeff,
There is an element of truth in what you say, because quite often the walls are left standing with holes through the roof and the inside of the house is gutted!!! :( BUT...... many times we have contained kitchen fires to the KITCHEN !!!!! With that said, do I want the FD to come with that possible outcome and still maintain 99% of my worldly possessions ???

YES !!! IMHO of course !

Have a nice Thanksgiving BTW, to you and your family!

We have one on our front lights to alert friends that the dogs are outside, so they don't get run over in the driveway. Won't help the fire department, because by the time they see the flashing lights, they have found the house.

Point taken. If they could get here fast enough to contain a kitchen fire to the kitchen, that would be fantastic. Hopefully, I will never have to deal with the dilemma. Thanks for the holiday wishes, and the same to everyone here:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I had a friend who was a member of his the up north there hey volunteer fire department. He said their claim to fame was that they had never lost a foundation. He has a strange sense of humor. He was also the county coroner, when the phone would ring early in the morning he'd say "somebody woke up dead this morning, be back in an hour."

To clear things up a little: Our mailbox on the street is well marked and we always got our mail. Even those in the neighborhood whose painted numbers faded off of the mailbox always get their mail because the mailman comes every day and knows the route well. However, if we get a temporary mailman the ones with faded numbers may have problems.
Our problem comes from those not used to our neighborhood. (UPS, Fed Ex, DHL, repairmen, out of town relatives, etc.) When coming up the road, before they get to my house (with clearly marked numbers), they come to my neighbor's house, (with no numbers) and assume it is my house and go there instead. This is particularly annoying when my neighbor is not home and a relative has made a 4 hour trip to come see me, or a repairman comes out on schedule, and they turn around and leave when no one is home. I think I will buy my neighbor a nice address plaque for Christmas.

It is not only for a fire that this is important; remember the typical fire dept runs about 85% of its calls on medicals. A delay in a serious situation could mean the difference of saving a life. Actual "fires" are only about 5-8% of a typical fire department calls.

In regards to fire, at least in this area, it is an issue for a house fire to invlove wildland too. It is not uncommon for an engine to come in to fight the house fire, and another to come in to fight a resulting grass or brush fire. Or, vica versa; an out of control brush pile extends to invole a house, barn, etc.

In most parts of the US, 911 calls will link a landline phone number to an address. Unfortunately, finding that address is not always easy.

When I went to get my septic permit a few years ago, they told me that I need to go to the 911 office for an address. I went there, filled out a form and the next day a girl from that office came out to the site. I had to mark where the driveway would be, and advised that if I ever moved the driveway, they would have to be notified and my address would be changed. She drove back to the beginning of the road and came back again. My address is 498 because the center of my driveway is .498 miles from the beginning of the road. We don't have a sign on our road and the county would not install one because 'it is not a county road', they same reason they would not install my culvert. Of course the county does actually maintain the road because of the school bus using it. The road from the state highway 1.5 miles back to our road is not marked either and the county won't put one up 'just because'.
I really don't worry about the fire dept. finding us because they are about 20 miles away. Our mailbox is marked and the mailman has no problem, neither do UPS of FedX, but DHL couldn't find us without a seeing eye dog.

In our area, private "non-county" roads are up to the owners to mark; all the roads in our "neighborhood" are; we are are 5 and 10 acre lots.

20 miles from the fire station is a fair distance. Reminds me of being farther out in the hills here. Still minutes make a difference if a life is hanging by a thread.

Dusty - you are spooking me out a bit. Your public profile occupation is listed as "shipping clerk". With your quote above I have to ask what do you ship?

NEWSFLASH!!! My $500 camera was just delivered today by UPS to 7225. Too bad I live at 7525 and the package was clearly marked and so is my house. Lucky the neighbor realized the mistake and was honest enough to phone me. :) Sometimes it just doesn't matter how clearly things are marked.

Huge mistakes are one reason I have a post office box...
You see, I live about 1000 feet from the intersection of ******** Road and ******** Avenue.
Both the road and the avenue have the same name and intersect one another, causing all kinds of confusion when giving directions.
When putting my address into Mapquest or other mapping software, the red star shows up over a mile away!

To make matters worse, I live on the county line, and not only does my road have another name for those living across the road, but their addresses only have three digits, while the ones on this side of the road have four digits.

It's difficult to give directions to my house!
