I do the lower section as you do, blowing in one direction, backing up, and shifting over to do the next pass while keeping the chute pointed in the same direction (to a point, in my case usually to the north). The driveway, however, is mostly perpendicular to the lower section, hence trying to blow to one side only, either to the east or west, depending, which requires rotating the chute to the opposite side.
Interesting how we develop plans as we get to know the capabilities (and drawbacks) or our blowers, depending on the specific driveway orientation and prevailing (as well as "after the storm") winds of our particular geographic area.
