Chuck, your wife seemed a little harsh but you should give the guy more than one strike. And you can't convey in a paragraph or two here, his body language, attitude, swagger, or whatever made you bristle so we still don't have the whole story. That said, whenever I tell my side of a story about a perceived dick, later it seems that I was seeking confirmation rather than feedback.
My old neighbor was pinned under his tractor in a remote part of the farm until his wife finally went looking for him after dark. He had been an infantry scout in France/WWII- a smart, tough guy. He described the pain in his crushed leg out there and how he obsessively checked his watch, wondering how soon his wife would become concerned. Finally he forced himself to wait for what he guessed was an hour before checking his watch again. Only two minutes had passed. He would have been glad to see any neighbor, trespasser, poacher, or psychopath.
Whenever someone on a mission-for-God passes my 4 no-trespassing signs while driving up to my remote place looking for pets, a place to hunt or off-road, I think maybe someday I might be glad to see them.
