I like the hitch left in.
One ICY SNOWY day a truck, about F250 size managed to "short stop" in front of my Dodge B200 van because of idiots in front of him.
In slow motion I glided into his hitch, at < 5mph.

Got out, both looked, said have a good day. Didn't scratch the paint on my bumper, didn't affect him. I'm sure if we went bumper to bumper we would have had more problems.
I routinely remove my hitch because I also use it with the tractors for towing my trailer.
