I thought we had discussed this recently. I looked for a thread but didn't find one quickly so... new thread.

Had a guy at work this past week knock his shin on a hitch in the parking lot and report an injury because of it. This prompted the company to release a company wide email pointing out IL state regulation stating you must remove the hitch (or cover it in a red cover) and please comply with said provisions for safety.

So I looked it up.

Illinois General Assembly - Full Text of HB3669

That is a bill that didn't pass, not a law. Click on "Bill Status" near the top of the page.

If people are too stupid to look where they are walking, then putting a red cover on it isn't going to protect them either. I am so tired of big government writing stupid laws to protect stupid people from doing stupid things. One time of cracking the shin on a trailer hitch should be enough for a lifetime of "don't walk too close to a truck bumper" experience.

Gary said it perfectly. :)

I agree with the company. Remove the hitch when not in use. Seems pretty obvious to me the way way they are designed with a hitch pin is for that very purpose.

Most times I do, sometimes I don't. But I don't need Uncle Sugar to tell me whether to remove it or not.

This topic again ! Charlton Heston said it best:

I never liked leaving the ball mounts on a truck when not pulling a trailer, but do not believe the government should be telling people they cannot do it.

I have 4 trailers. All require a different ball height to keep the trailer close to level.
I have a ball mount set up for each trailer. The ball mounts always stay with the trailers.

Get out the popcorn. :popcorntub:

Just watch where you're walking folks or suffer the sore shins.

I like the hitch left in.

One ICY SNOWY day a truck, about F250 size managed to "short stop" in front of my Dodge B200 van because of idiots in front of him.

In slow motion I glided into his hitch, at < 5mph.

BUMP

Got out, both looked, said have a good day. Didn't scratch the paint on my bumper, didn't affect him. I'm sure if we went bumper to bumper we would have had more problems.

I routinely remove my hitch because I also use it with the tractors for towing my trailer.

Yup, don't walk 8" away from the back of my vehicle, at that range, you keys in your pocket are probably dragging across my paint. If you are going to walk into my hitch, then going thru life with things lil curbs, potholes, um, kids, etc, are gonna be a problem for ya.

Font need another nanny state law.

Here's a good one... Don't be close enough to touch my truck.. Since the hitch is at the tear, this should be an easy task, put the phone away when walking

My pintle hitch is always in the receiver and most of it is covered by the spare tire. IF you walk into it, then you are way too close to my vehicle anyway.

People who have lived most of their lives in rattlesnake country likely never walk into a hitch. You develop a strong habit of watching where you walk.

Moving to SW WA, with acres of thick, knee-high salal, but no rattlesnakes, took a lot of habit breaking. :)

Why is it the further east you get of the Rockies the more stupid laws/people get. Sorry not lugging the hitch around every time I drop a trailer.

Go far west and they cook up some stupid ones too. I don't know how California and north east are so in lockstep with moronic laws...
