Does a french drain just refer to a ditch filled with rock or does it also mean a perforated pipe?

A couple of surface drains would be nice for the winter rains when ground is frozen.

Use solid PVC pipe with holes, like found in leach lines. It is more expensive. But, if it ever needs cleaning, or gets a clog, you can run a snake down it. If that corrogated stuff clogs, your out of luck; no way a snake will fit. Or a hose... They just hang up on the corrugations. And, the corrugations hold silt really well.
