Well ran the tractor again this evening. It's still loud. It's like it's partially straight piped! Just has a loud sound. Very similar to the video I posted above.

L3301 above while noisy is not as loud as my L2501.

Also when running at night you can see a fog from the exhaust go up past the headlights and the exhaust really smells... like an old 7.3 liter power stroke. My L3830 and ZD326 never smell like that.

I'm going to call dealer in the morning. I'm not a fan of this tractor at the moment. A real shame. /0:

Well went to the dealer this morning. Started up another L2501. It sounded just like mine. Loud. They sounds like an old Ford diesel or something. Exhaust makes a real racket. Just like that video I posted up in this thread off YouTube.

Started up a L3301. MUCH quieter! Quieter than my L3830 too. Really liked it. Of course it has all the emission junk on it. But hey... My ears are not ringing after running it!

So dealer and I are gonna figure out something on how to quieten up mine. I'll keep you posted.

I wouldn't really compare to an L3301/3901 -- the L2501 is actually much more like the older L3200/3800, in fact it shares some of the same exact parts as those older models if you browse through the catalog. Exhaust plumbing aside, those older models are more directly related.

My L3200 is pretty loud, louder than my B2920 was, but I wouldn't say it's too out of the ordinary.

BTW, that L2501 is a sleeper of a tractor. They kept it under the 26HP threshold simply by de-rating the max RPM. It's actually a larger displacement engine than the old 32HP L3200 has. At lower RPMs, I'd wager it's got almost as much pep as the old 37HP L3800.

Yes you are correct. Nice engine. You bring up a good point. I wonder if a L3800 muffler is quieter than the L2501. I need to look at the K-Part list.

Currently I cannot tolerate the L2501 noise level. It's very un Kubota like.

I never run a diesel tractor without hearing protection. I wouldn't know how many dB they put out.

I would say it's the tier 4 emission add ons that make the new tractors a bit quieter

Yes the exhaust system makes the difference. However my L3830 which is a 2004 model is also more quiet... and has more displacement than the L2501. Of course the L3830 has no emissions control.

The L2501 is roughly 93 to 94 decibels (dB). The L3830 is around 87 dB. Since dB is a logarithmic scale that makes a big difference to the ear. It just needs a better muffler.

Well I have the opportunity to trade up to a L3301. So what's ya'lls opinion.... spend another $3,000 and get a L3301 which is quieter or keep the L2501?

If I keep the L2501 I will have to do something with the exhaust. Possibly install a L3830 muffler.

The other issue is the L2501 really stinks... smells like a Ford diesel truck if you are familiar with those. Blah. Not sure if that will go away after it breaks in or not. When running at night you can see a fog of exhaust going past the headlights.

What would you do?

It sounds like youve already made up your mind.
