New Low Sulfer Diesel in 2006 -PROBLEMS?

Here is a quote from Shell Canada................Just buy the fuel and quit worrying about it!!!!

Take care

Will

As of Oct. 1, 1994, Shell and other major Canadian refiners began selling only low-sulphur (0.05 per cent) diesel fuels, under an agreement with the federal government to reduce particulate emissions.

Shell Fuels advisor Colin Britton says some concerns have been raised in the United States about loss of fuel pump lubricity, due to sulphur-content reductions. But he says he sees no cause for concern in Canada, because Shell's Scotford Refinery near Edmonton has been manufacturing ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel (0.01 per cent) for more than a decade without experiencing any signs of lubricity problems.

Hi,

I was working at a Hi-Volume highway center when LSD came out, and for the first few months a few of the new ( 1994 ) Powerstrokes, Cumins, etc had lubricity problems. The the Gas companies got it together and it has been fine since!!

Take care

Will

WilliamBos, I will have no problem if I am provided with a written warranty from Colin Britton giving me a guarantee to replace or repair of any damage caused from lack of lubrication from use of their fuel. Otherwise, if they are not willing to put their money where their mouth is, I will rely on the information I've been able to read from a multitude of other sources.
If someone is sure of their claims, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever for them to not provide such a written warranty. If they will not, they must be simply providing "lip service", which does me no good. If you can show a written guarantee as to such, I'll have no problem using their products at any time. If not, I'll have to lump that claim in with all the others that talk a big stick but simply disappear when it comes down to backing up their claims. I look forward to seeing a written guarantee from your source to cover any damage caused by lack of lubricity of their diesel fuel. Thanks!

Well you will just have to use it and find out!! WONT YOU!!!!!!

Thats what I would and have done!! Rather than worry yourself to death on it use it, if the performance of your vehicle suffers from it then make some changes , other than this why worry about something before it happens!! We have been using it up here for a while with no worries, and if it works for us, then it will work for you!!!!!!

GRRR!! I am done with this debate!!!!!!!!!

This has been entertaining reading /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif… don’t stop yet… /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The subject however reminds me of everything that was said when lead was removed from gasoline.

I think products generally improve with time and we will all end up using whatever comes out of the pump /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif… even if its soy peanut or french fry oil filtered through an old sock /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif… some will use additives some won’t. Life goes on…we may end up using hydrogen /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. KennyV.

In the Exxon lube oil community, we went through similar research and all on sulfur in lube oil. It seems that some sulfur compounds act like vulcanizing sulfur in rubber: e.g. they improve it. However, what Exxon had to do to produce an ideal lube oil, like Mobil 1 PAO WITHOUT any sulfur, was to treat it with catalysts under pressure to remove the bad molecules, including essentially all the sulfur. Sulfur in lubricating oil was not improving its lubricity. What it did was to improve its resistance to breakdown by the other bad molecules that mostly contain nitrogen or doubly-bonded molecules (benzene-like).

Benz made gasoline-powered engines as far back as somewhere in the 1960s with injector pumps that appears virtually identical to those used in my Benz diesel engines. Gasoline has much less lubricity than diesel, any diesel.

I really question any research that says that sulfur is a lubricant. It's probably acting like a cross-linking agent between some molecules that therefore make them appear to be more like heavier molecules (e.g. like the adjacent lube oil molecules they were distilled from). Sulfur itself is not doing any lubrication. I'll bet even low sulfur kerosene would have enough lubrication properties to satisfy most injector pump requirements. Even water is a pretty good lubricant.

I emailed Kubota about using ultra low sulfur fuel in my 2000 bx2200. I had a phone msg today, that my engine (tier 1) should be used with the road fuel due out in 2007 (tier 3).

Oh what the heck. If your worried about lubrication. Just pour some Mystery Oil or tranny fluid into the tank with each fill-up.

From Diesel VS Heating Oil you said:( I just got a msg from Kubota concerning the use of the low sulfur onroad fuel (tier 3) to be in placce by 2007. It should not be used in my BX2200, made in the year 2000 (tier 1 engine). I guess I will have to look for an alternitive to buying at the gas station.

in this thread it seems you meant to say should NOT be used. John

If this is the case, What are the recommendations for the Owner that uses only small amounts of fuel?

Where should they get five or ten gallon at a time?
