Off road dump trailer options

I hadn't heard of it before you posted here. The MUTS has some interesting features that others don't have. Unfortunately, it has the same drawback as the Woodland Mills trailer (at least for my needs): 2000# payload. That's just too low for me. I'm really looking for at least 3000#, which would be a better match for my tractor and allow me to haul 1/2 cord of green hardwood at once. It also has a 40˚ max dump angle. That's plenty for a lot of uses, but the soils around here just won't dump reliably at that angle.

Oh I see. Yeah 3000 lbs is a lot of weight. Possibly a street legal small dump trailer would be best for you.

Have you considered the tandem axle trailer from Country Manufacturing rated at 4000#? I have one and it works as advertised.

They were mentioned up a few posts. From everything I've seen so far that is the way I would go for my needs and my budget. Most everything else does not haul enough for me.

I like the looks of the King Kutter trailer. Have you seen those?

N80,

I have the Country 2 ton tandem axle trailer as well.

It has held up reasonably well ... but it is on the lighter side as far as construction goes.

Having said that, I've used to it haul a snot load (30+ loads) of wet, heavy sheep manure from my neighbor's and it never broke on me and it was probably overloaded on every one.

However I did let a guy I used to work with borrow it and he managed to bust the hinge.

I checked it out when it was mentioned a few posts up. I've exchanged emails with Dave at Country Manufacturing. It's in the running if I end up going with an off-road-only trailer. The 20 mph max speed is an issue - not so much in the woods, but even an off-road trailer I'll be taking on the road on occasion for short distances (with an SMV triangle). What I'm really looking for is a dump trailer that's street-legal (or can be made so with a bit of work), rugged enough to go in the woods, narrow - so I don't get hung up maneuvering in the woods, and rated for at least 3000#.

Check -

I thought you bought the Woodland Mills "Woodland ATV Trailer" not the T-Rex. Both carry 2000#, but The T-Rex has the long pivoting boom arm that will lift 440# and dump 650#. The Woodland trailer has no pivoting boom. It has a straight post that sticks up, which is what holds the winch cable to allow for dumping the trailer. The Woodland trailer looses the crane-like ability to load itself, but gains the ability to dump the full 2000# load. You can load logs into the Woodland trailer by latching the dump bed in a partially dumped position, using the tailgate as a ramp, and winching them up into the back. Both of these trailer models have a maximum dump angle of 60˚ (using the winch -- if the weight allows you, you can pivot to 90˚ by hand-lifting).

The DR VersaTrailer is basically a clone of an older model of the T-Rex. The main differences are that the 1-ton VersaTrailer will only dump to about 35˚ as compared to the T-Rex current configuration which dumps to 60˚. Load, lift, and dump capacities are identical. The VersaTrailer offers an optional tow hitch on the rear which would allow you to attach another trailer (if your tow vehicle can manage it) or a log splitter or whatever. DR also offers optional bed side extenders so you can fit more into the dump bed, and an optional electric winch (which runs off the tow vehicle's battery & electrical system).

I had considered the VersaTrailer, but the inability to dump the full load killed it for me. I like the side extensions DR offers (though it looks as though you could fit them onto the Woodland Mills trailers ??), and the rear trailer hitch is a nice idea.

BTW, you can convert between the Woodland Mills T-Rex and Woodland trailers by simply buying the other boom/winch assembly (for $200 or $300 depending on which one you need). They will not work on the VersaTrailer, due to a different method of connecting the winch cable to the dump body.
______________

I've almost bought the Woodland Mills Woodland trailer a couple of times. Any of these trailers is a great match for an ATV or subcompact. They will also work well behind a compact tractor. What has stopped me is that I would really like something with a payload capacity of 3000 to 4000#. It would be a better match for what I need to do, and for the pulling capacity of my tractor. Finding one with that capacity that is also street-legal (or could be made to be so) would be ideal. I'm still digging up options for that.

Actually, I did in fact get the non-"T-Rex" model of the Woodland Mills trailer, but it came with the "T-Rex" logo on the tailgate anyway. So, I'm not complaining, since I like the name, and I will enjoy calling it "T-Rex" - just for fun! BTW, if you look closely you can see that the log-carrying arms can stay on with the DR VersaTrailer, whereas on the Woodland Mills trailer they have to be taken off and stored somewhere when the dump box is installed. (Bad idea, Woodland!) I have asked both companies if I can get just that single part in the wider configuration, but I am not hopeful since they both come in a box directly from China, and neither dealer seems to carry any spare parts.

Anyway, I have it up at the cottage now fully assembled, and will post pics soon! MUTS here I come!:cool2:

T-Rex lives! Very nice trailer, very solid, with thick galvanized steel square tubing for the undercarriage. The dump winch works as advertised, and smoothly. The tires reek of VOC's, but I'm hoping that will dissipate with time. One thing it did not come with was safety chains, so I had to spend an extra 50 bucks on those and the connectors. Also, I may decide to extend the front bar, and that is another nice feature that you can adjust the length of the trailer. (Comes in very handy when you remove the box and haul logs.)

More to come after I load and dump some dirt next weekend. Also, I can adjust where exactly the dump box sits, so that I have approximately the right amount of tongue weight when the trailer is loaded. Will have to experiment with that. And I have to add some grease to that swivel mechanism on the front tongue. Kind of a unique feature, that swivel tongue - keeps your ATV from being rolled over if by some chance you roll the trailer!

T-Rex works!

Dump mechanism works great. But, these logs were slightly shorter than the trailer box, so when they shifted back a wee bit, the tongue weight became negative.

Have to move the box just a bit farther forward. (More pics about that later.) 👍
