Perfect Farm Welder

/ Perfect Farm Welder #21
a Lincoln 225 ac has served me well for 25 years. been able to do just about all my own repairs myself. all the extra features may be nice but for me I don't need them.
The Lincoln ‘tombstone’ Buzz Box has been a fixture in my shop for 48 years and still works as advertised.
Fan bearings are a little raspby now days but so is the owner.
With an original purchase price of $99.95 it doesn’t owe me a dime.

Same kinda 'man-up' baloney on another thread parsing whether a 20v or propane framing nailer is better.

My current nailer hasn't let me down in 45 years or faithful service, so why get all fancy about some modern blingety gizmo just to please others? ;)

If a Lincoln tombstone was good enough for my grandfather it's good enough for anybody. :D

btw, IMO Birdhunter1 got much bang for the bucks with the Powerarc200.

I have a couple of those myself.... They never let you down.

One thing about that old Lincoln, it's a great fishing worm producer in ac mode. They dance right up out of the ground....:D

And after that they make a good boat anchor so you can finish your fishing expedition.

The old Lincoln AC225 (tombstone) is probably the most successful home/shop/farm welder of all time without a doubt! They work for years with little or no maintenance, I think we can all agree on that. I tend to always reevaluate what I do for better/easier/faster ways of getting a task done. Work smarter, not harder. With this in mind I prefer the Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DC for shop work. It’s the big brother to the Tombstone. At +/- 350 lbs it’s not easy to move but has a great arc. I also have a Miller Maxstar 140STR that weighs in at 11lbs that runs 7018 smooth as silk. Uses 110 or 220 input volts happily and will lift arc Tig as well. I have a Lincoln MP210 inverter Mig welder as well that is very user friendly as well. I believe a person can embrace new technologies and move forward without forgetting the old proven ways of the past. In some ways, not all they can be better! I’m sure most of use aren’t driving around in 50’s era cars with flathead engines and stick shift transmissions. Have a great 4th

The old Lincoln tombstone we had on the farm set out in the weather with full exposure to the elements. It worked for years with no problems. I think my brother took it when my Dad died and is still using as far as I know.
You cant do that with the new inverters. My new Everlast specifically says to not get it wet at all.

Your original manual for the Lincoln probably said pretty much the same thing. Here is the old original tombstone manual. Regardless, water and electricity do not mix.

My partner and I have bought and restored several Idealarc 250 welders. Many times we pull the sheet metal to find decades of dust bunnies, dirt daubers and grime. After we blow as much out as possible we use a pressure washer and Mean Green cleaner to get the final layer of grime off. After they dry for a few days we lubricate what is necessary and they work fine. I wouldn’t recommend leaving them out in the weather for years but I’m sure many have and are still working. Anything short of a direct lightning strike and your good to go

Since hammers were introduced---

Have U noticed the race for the most $$$ hammers?
LOL, 20 oz titanium hammer? @ $150' ???
I always thought 20 oz was 20 no matter what it was made from.
Heck does the nail know the difference as to what hit it?

AND hanging from your tool belt is the 20 oz titanium feel lighter?

Since Titanium is lighter than aluminum, how big would a 20 oz. hammer be if made from Titanium? Very big!! Too big to be of any use driving a nail.

Um... Titanium is considerably heavier than Aluminum.

Aluminum 168.48 lbs per cubic foot
Titanium 283.39 lbs per cubic foot
Steel rolled 490.0 lbs per cubic foot.

While I think using titanium for hammers is pretty ridiculous, There must be some reason it is being done.

Thinking about this, maybe you meant to say "since titanium is lighter than steel" Of course hammers (at least the faces) are made out of steel not Aluminum. some might have an aluminum handle, or fiberglass etc. But I don't know of any framing hammers with aluminum faces. I have seen plenty of brass and plastic and some aluminum faced hammers for precise light work like gun smithing, but not nail driving.

yes, and it's a very good one, too.. Titanium transfers energy efficiently
The major attraction to using a titanium hammer is vibration and weight. Titanium, as a metal has the same strength as steel with 45% less weight, and exhibits much less vibration than steel. ... It goes to reason that titanium can help to save your elbow from the shock of hammering.

I figured there was some good reason, or they certainly would not sell very many if it was just a boutique thing.

That vibration thing probably explains why them fellows in funny costumes who chase little round balls all over pastures for hours got them titanium golfball hammers. Lot of them boys look pretty sensitive to my eye.

Cousin who just sided my house used a 10 oz titanium claw hammer, said it cost him $125.

I suggested putting flex tape or similar around the mid-handle so he could hold it in his teeth.

I didn't try it out. My hammering makes my welding look good. My golfing is worse than either.

In my circle that game is called Pasture Pool.
